M Football 2011-Wolverine Offense Shines, Struggles-Defense Shines-Eight Season Wins Achieved-More Wins Wanted

Michigan faced their venerable old Big Ten foe, Illinois in Champaign Saturday. While Illinois featured no Red Grange, or Dick Butkus, and the Wolverines no Tom Harmon or Charles Woodson in their lineups, there was a strenuous competition with plenty of talent on the field for both sides.  Michigan’s Denard Robinson and Jason Scheelhasse can provide football fireworks with the best of them.   One hundred thirty two points in last year’s three overtime 67-65 classic is all the proof needed.

There was plenty at stake this year.  The Wolverines are still in the Legends chase statistically, although that possibility became more moot with the loss last week to Iowa.  They needed desperately to add to their 7 wins on the season to erase visions of similarity with their slides the past three years.

M Football 2011- WOLVERINE OFFENSIVE TO’S SQUANDER OPPORTUNITIES, RUN DEFENSE INCONSISTENT. RESULT IS M-16, IOWA 24.

The gales of November seem to be building for the Michigan Wolverines Football team (now 7-2, 3-2 Big Ten). On Saturday Iowa’s Hawkeyes seized control of the football game early and never let go of it.

An inconsistent defense let the powerful and talented Hawkeye running back Marcus Coker advance the ball effectively from time to time over most of the game, but especially in the first half. Coker lugged 29 times for 140-yards and 2 TTs.  The defense did rise up at time and keep Michigan in the game.

NO SPOILERMAKERS, NO BIG DRUM, NO GOLDEN GIRL, NO SILVER TWINS, AND NO WOLVERINE SLIDE. MICHIGAN 36- PURDUE 14

Purdue’s Boilermaker’s left the above home, in losing to the determined Wolverines at Michigan Stadium Saturday.  The Wolverines drummed out a much needed Big Ten victory, 36-14.

That the Boilers were made to steam out of Ann Arbor with a loss was very important to the well-being of this edition of the Wolverines on the heels of their recent physical beat down in Spartan Stadium.  It appears the bye week was very beneficial.  A seven and one record at this point in the season, and a chance for more, is as welcome as it was unexpected.

Brady Hoke – Time to show what he’s made of

Up until this point he could do no wrong.

He dismissed the initial doubts of many by luring Greg Mattison to be his defensive coordinator.

He talked and acted like Michigan coach should.

He spoke of coaches taking responsibility, of his team needing to out-tough opponents.

And the dominoes fell; Western, Notre Dame, Eastern, San Diego State, Minnesota, and Northwestern.

M Football 2011-Wolverines Shine-Gophers Pine- Michigan 58-Minnesota 0

First, the Gophers lost their Coach, Jerry Kill, to illness.  Fortunately he was back on the sidelines Saturday, hale and hearty to all appearances.

Then they lost their talented starting QB, the adept Marqueis Gray, to an injured toe, and he could not play Saturday.  They had to utilize Freshman Max Shortell at that critical position.  He endured a very tough afternoon learning about B1G (Big Ten) football, but he showed some skill.  He was 11 of 22 for 104 yards with a long throw of 33.

After that, they had to face an energized and physical group of Wolverines who wanted to get off to a good start on their Big Ten schedule in the new Legends Division.  They did so offensively and defensively.
