The last thing he needed was for one of his returning linemen to be involved in an embarrassing off-the-field incident. But that’s the position he finds himself in after details emerged of center Graham Glasgow’s arrest during spring camp.
Brady Hoke summed up the current state of his football team during his weekly press conference.
“We’re not any good yet, we have a long way to go.”
Last season’s 7-6 finish and the subsequent hiring of new offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier have brought an increased level of attention to spring practice.
A common refrain from players is how the pace of practice has changed from past years. The tempo of practice has been ramped up to increase plays per practice session to help players adapt to the new offense.
Michigan’s improvement depends on the offensive line improving and its ability to run the ball next season.
Spring practice is a difficult time to determine if the offensive line has truly improved, but early reports indicate that Nussmeier has emphasized the running game in a significant way, and players from all position groups are recognizing the change.
Entering this season, Michigan has three critical games on the schedule and plays all three away from Michigan Stadium.
With doubts still lingering from last season’s 1-4 November slide followed by a bowl loss to Kansas State, the team’s early-season matchup with Notre Dame takes on increased significance.
Thursday was a bad day for two Michigan offensive lineman.
Prior to practice Michigan released a statement that offensive lineman Graham Glasgow was “…suspended for a portion of spring football and will miss the season opener against Appalachian State for a violation of team expectations.”
