Nothing But ‘Net – Week #01 – 10/31/2011 – Season Preview

Hey, welcome back for another season of Nothing But ‘Net.  Let’s start things right off with a few questions/answers:

Q: What is this “Nothing But ‘Net” thing, and how is it different from the other 5000 University of Michigan men’s basketball sites?

A: Good question!  “Nothing But ‘Net” (NBN) is the longest running (since 1999) UM basketball site on the Web, with a special angle you won’t find anywhere else: the view from the cheap seats, specifically sections 209/210.  The motto for UMGoBlue.com is “By Fans … For Fans”, and NBN is a great example of that.  I’ve been a UM basketball fan since 1974, and I’ve been to almost every home game since then, win or lose, good or bad.  During the season, I write once a week (by noon Monday) about the games from the previous week, but I also look at season-long trends, all from the viewpoint of a fan.  Sure, there are plenty of other UM basketball sites out there, and I read several of them myself (MGoBlue.com, AnnArbor.com, UMHoops.com, and MGoBlog.com), but the viewpoint at those sites is “journalist”, with media access.  I write about what I see during the game, as a spectator, a fan, and an usher.  Yeah, I’m working as an usher again, for sections 209 and 210.  If you go to a game, drop by and say “hi”.

NO SPOILERMAKERS, NO BIG DRUM, NO GOLDEN GIRL, NO SILVER TWINS, AND NO WOLVERINE SLIDE. MICHIGAN 36- PURDUE 14

By Andy Andersen

Purdue’s Boilermaker’s left the above home, in losing to the determined Wolverines at Michigan Stadium Saturday.  The Wolverines drummed out a much needed Big Ten victory, 36-14.

That the Boilers were made to steam out of Ann Arbor with a loss was very important to the well-being of this edition of the Wolverines on the heels of their recent physical beat down in Spartan Stadium.  It appears the bye week was very beneficial.  A seven and one record at this point in the season, and a chance for more, is as welcome as it was unexpected.

Brady Hoke – Time to show what he’s made of

Up until this point he could do no wrong.

He dismissed the initial doubts of many by luring Greg Mattison to be his defensive coordinator.

He talked and acted like Michigan coach should.

He spoke of coaches taking responsibility, of his team needing to out-tough opponents.

And the dominoes fell; Western, Notre Dame, Eastern, San Diego State, Minnesota, and Northwestern.

M FOOTBALL 2011-OUCH, ITS THE SPARTANS AGAIN-M-14, MSU-28

By Andy Andersen

Saturday the Michigan State Spartans’ defense overwhelmed the Denard Robinson led Wolverine offense to notch their fourth straight victory over the Wolverines, and to notch Brady Hoke’s first loss as the Wolverine head football coach.

We should not be over eager to condemn Denard Robinson. The 7 sacks the Wolverines endured indicates that it was not the best game that the offensive line has had this year, although it is perplexing that Denard could not get rid of the ball more than he did.
