Nothing But ‘Net – Week #08 – 12/19/2011 – SWAC Attack

The (#20) University of Michigan men’s basketball team played two games last week, and they won both of them, to improve their record to 9-2 on the season, including 4 wins in a row.  On Tuesday (12/13/2011) they beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff (UAPB), 63-50, then on Saturday (12/17/2011) they beat Alabama A&M (AAMU), 87-57.  Both games were in Crisler Arena, and both teams are members of the mighty Southwest Athletic Conference (SWAC).

Even though the score of the UAPB game looks pretty close, it was really a 25-point win that turned into a 13-point win in the last 90 seconds.  The point is that both games were blowouts against a couple “cupcakes”.  Michigan has had a problem with 2nd half letdowns when they have a big lead at halftime against inferior competition, so it was great to see them keep the throttle down for the whole 40 minutes vs. AAMU.  UM’s lead continued to grow for the whole game, and even the benchwarmers played well enough to keep the lead around 30 points.

Nothing But ‘Net – Week #07 – 12/12/2011 – “Just Win, Baby”

The (#20) University of Michigan men’s basketball team played one game last week, and they won it, to improve their record to 7-2 on the season.  On Saturday (12/10/2011) they beat Oakland University, 90-80, at The Palace Of Auburn Hills.  Hence, the Oakland (Raiders)/Al Davis quote in the headline.

The (#14) University of Michigan men’s basketball team played two games last week, and they won one and lost one, to move to 6-2 on the season.  On Tuesday (11/29/2011) they lost at Virginia, 70-58, then on Saturday (12/03/2011) they beat Iowa State, 76-66, in Crisler Arena.  The UVa game was part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, which the Big Ten won again, for the 3rd year in a row.

Nothing But ‘Net – Week #05 – 11/28/2011 – Two Out Of Three Ain’t Bad

The (#15) University of Michigan men’s basketball team played three games last week in the EA Sports Maui Invitational tournament, and they won two out of three of them, to move to 5-1 on the season.  On Monday (11/21/2011), they beat (#8) Memphis 73-61, on Tuesday (11/22/2011), they lost to (#6) Duke 82-75, then on Wednesday (11/23/2011), they beat UCLA 79-63.  As a result, they finished 3rd (out of 8 teams) in the tournament, which is very respectable.  It was a very talented field this year, and Michigan’s win over Memphis was huge.  Michigan played very well, and it was very encouraging to see, especially after three lukewarm wins over “cupcakes” in Crisler Arena to start the season.  UM played pretty well in the loss to Duke, then played another solid game to beat UCLA handily.  It was a good tournament.
