Michigan is teetering on the edge of an epic collapse, falling from the national rankings with a thud. The offensive line is in shambles, which is leaving quarterback Devin Gardner completely unprotected (14 sacks in the last two games) and providing no holes for the running game (minus-69 yards in the last two games) to generate yardage.

The University of Michigan football team won a national championship under Lloyd Carr, but when he announced his retirement many considered his program to be in decline.
As it turns out, six years later the Wolverines aren’t any better off, the program no further ahead, than when Carr stepped down.
Carr’s final season is most remembered for a shocking loss in the home opener to Appalachian State and a Citrus Bowl victory over Florida in his final game. But losses to Oregon, Wisconsin and Ohio State marred his farewell campaign and many fans thought that the Michigan block M had come to stand for mediocrity.

With the Big Ten conference title now extremely unlikely, Hoke faces the most critical four-game stretch of his Michigan tenure. If his team plays well, he can keep his staff intact to pursue his goal of returning Michigan to national prominence. If they stumble, it’s hard to imagine a scenario in which changes won’t be necessary.
