GDT: Season 2023, Week 2, Saturday September 9th

"...Based upon a deathless loyalty to Michigan and all her ways; an enthusiasm that makes it second nature for Michigan Men to spread the gospel of their university to the world's distant outposts; a conviction that nowhere is there a better university, in any way, than this Michigan of ours."

GDT: Season 2023, Week 2, Saturday September 9th

Post by CraigRohsDad »

So the UNLV Rebels roll into town this Saturday to see if their "Go-Go" offense can score some points in the Big House, and if their 3-2-6 defense can frustrate the Michigan running game.

Apparently, UNLV's OC, Brennan Marion, likes to have two guys in the backfield who stand close to the QB in the shotgun. The offense seems like a triple option, but with a threat of the deep ball. It's a gimmicky offense that Marion actually used to upset the Rebels at home when he was OC for Howard back in 2017.

UNLV simply doesn't have the horses to be a threat. They did beat the FCS's Bryant Bulldogs last week 44-14, but their Defense gave up 409 yards to the inferior team, and they were on the field nearly twice as long as Bryant's D (ToP 39:04 - 20:56).

It seems the Rebels assumed they could beat Bryant simply by running the ball, and they were right, but they were also outgained & they lost the turnover battle (1-2). That was all at home, so it's unlikely they can replicate such an outcome at Michigan Stadium.

The "Go-Go" offense and Michigan run game may leave the UNLV Defense on the field most of the day, so bend-don't-break won't work this week.

I'm thinking the UM run game gets back to normal this week, but if it doesn't the pass game will still oblige in a lopsided outcome.

Another ho-hum win against an inferior opponent. Defense looked better and it was nice to see the front 4 get home for multiple sacks! Just missed another shot at a shutout with the Rebs getting a late td against Michigan's 3rd and 4th stringers on defense.

Offensively, what more can you say than JJ freaking McCarthy??? After going 26-30 in the opener, all he did was follow that up by going 22-25 and another 280 yards! Oh and he started 13 for 13!!! He looks fully in command his game and this offense!!! Running game looked a little better with Corum. Biggest concern right now for me is getting the Don going!
