Do recruiting rankings translate?

https://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1806306

There is an old saying that goes: It isn't the Xs and Os, but the Jimmys and the Joes. This data certainly lends credibility to that statement, but the truth is both factor into on-field success. Not only does winning require bringing in better athletes than your opponents, but also what you do with those athletes once they arrive on your campus.

  • This year's Notre Dame team you can actually see real athletes on the field for the first time in ages yet they have a top 10 class every year.... So many times OSU recruits, Notre Dame recruits get bumped up when they commit and certain SEC schools etc...

In Notre Dame's case, they should have come down here and beat down U.Va.  However, U.Va had them on the ropes.  They were defeated on the defense.  A Hail Mary saved them.  U.Va shouldn't have been on the same field with them. It seems that no matter what coach they have, they will bring in top classes but the on-field results are not consistent with the "they-should-be-contending-for-the-national-championship" expectations.

  • I know this might sound dumb but who is jimmy and who is Joe ?

It means that it’s not necessarily the plays ("X’s and O’s") that a coach runs that win games, it’s the quality of the players ("Jimmys and Joes") who run those plays.
