Jim Leland steps down, ideas for a replacement?

Comments

  • Do not want Joe Madden he runs an entirely different clubhouse. Good manager though. Also I do not want Lamont or anyone on our coaching staff for that matter. I think DD might look at Dusty Baker, Kirk Gibson or maybe even Brad Ausmus (although he would be a longshot). My personal picks would be Ron Gardenhire or Buck Showalter but I think they are under contracts. Mike Scioscia is a good manager but he does not fit our style of play. I expect that they will pick one soon before the winter meetings in December. Whoever they pick I have confidence in DD.
  • As frustrated as I still am after the end of this past season, I do need to give Leyland a little credit.  He helped drag us out of the dark ages back in 2006 and made us relevant again.  He was also loved by all of his players.  He is definitely a Hall of Fame coach, without a doubt.  That being said, this team needs a new direction.  Who is next is up is a great question.  I am hearing names like Dusty Baker, Brad Ausmus, Tom Brookens, and even Gene Lamonte.  In my opinion, I would love it if they went after Kirk Gibson.  I don't know what the odds are that e could even get him, but I would be elated!!  I really do not want to see someone get hired from in-house.

  • As I said in the other thread, Gibby, end of story. I think he's locked up with the D'backs thru 2014 but if the Tigers are for real (& they have to be at this stage), they can swing a deal for him, a la the Blue Jays and Red Sox did for John Farrell.
  • Gibby and Derrick Hall have already announced he is staying put.

    Go Tigers!!
  • Dang it Gibby!!!  We should try to trade someone or something to them for him!!!!  To bad Francona got picked up by the Indians last year, I think he would have been an ideal fit.  One coach that they better not touch, or even think about going after, is Ozzie Guillen.  If they hire that S.O.B I will be regurgitating in my mouth until spring training.
  • The Indians might have been the only team to lure Francona away from his past job.

He is VERY CLOSE to President Mark Shapiro and GM Chris Antonetti. You may not remember but Tito worked for the Indians the year before he became manager of the BoSox.

Also, his dad, Tito, was a player for Cleveland in Terry's formative years.

Believe it or not but he loves Cleveland and his job!!
  • Btw, in my humble opinion, Leland and Francona were the 2 best managers in MLB or at least the AL.
  • It's looking like Lloyd McClendon to me.  This outta be fun.  Gibby and Dombrowski would never be able to co-exist so I highly doubt Gibby will manage here anytime soon, if at all.  Gardenhire is probably the best choice but he's not available.  At the end of the day we just need someone that can babysit a bunch of prima donna's and have a little bit of strategic ability.  Apparently the players actually listen to McClendon so who knows.

He was a terrible manager in Pittsburgh.

    Go Tigers!!
  • I hear ya TK and while DD probably will go that way, I am starting to hope that he will pick Ausmus. He will have the players respect and everything that I have read he is really intelligent. Being a catcher like Matheny of the Cardinals he should know how to handle pitchers. I know that he does not have previous managers experience but neither did Matheny. The main issues IMO for the new manager are: handling the starting pitching and bullpen; resting Miggy and Prince; and settling on a LF (if they sign Infante to play 2B). I also hope the Tigers will keep Jeff Jones and promote Durham as the hitting coach.
  • Leyland is staying on in some capacity, right? There’s a chance they are giving him some say in the matter….which probably isn’t great.

    Go Tigers!!

There are definitely two schools of thought: get a guy with experience who's been there and know's how to handle egos, OR get the up and comer who may not have the experience but can relate to younger guys, etc etc.  I don't like to use Matheny as an example as he is one of the VERY few who have done this but I also can't say I really care which way DD goes.  There are no "experienced" guys worth a sh** out there, McClendon doesn't exactly get anybody excited, and Ausmus has no experience.  This team is on the verge of winning a WS-I'd like to think that the next manager won't matter and that our guys will do it regardless of who the mgr. is.  We really just need someone to keep 2 hands on the wheel and drive.  That's it.
  • Ozzie came out today and said it’s his dream to manage Fatty...

    Go Tigers!!
  • And Guillen can just keep on dreaming.  He's a POS and doesn't belong managing an IHOP let alone a major league baseball team.
  • Vegas picked dodgers 5/1 and tigers 8/1 next year.

    Go Tigers!!

The Detroit Tigers interviewed San Diego Padres bench coach Rick Renteria for the manager job today.

The interview took place in California because Renteria is unable to travel after recent hip surgery.

Renteria became the fourth-known interviewee for the job, following Tigers hitting coach Lloyd McClendon, Dodgers third-base coach Tim Wallach and Padres front-office special assistant Brad Ausmus.

Renteria, 51, has never managed in the majors but has done so for several years in the minors, including four years with the Florida Marlins, when Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski ran that team.

He's also interviewed with the Cubs. I don't know...do we really need a guy who's never managed a MLB team before taking over this team or would we be better off with an experienced manager because as TK said, we just need someone to drive the car and not f*ck it up. What about a guy like Bob Brenly?

    Go Tigers!!
  • Interesting.  Hope this isn't our new Trammell, although all this guy has to do is keep the Ferrari on the freakin' road.
  • I like the hire. Dbacks are hiring Phil Nevin to be triple a manager. He was manager in Toledo last year.

You know your getting old when all the players you watched growing up are now head coaches or managers. I remember the days when my dad would tell me about how great a coach or manager was as a player.

    Go Tigers!!

    And find a bullpen...

Well, there is THAT little issue too. ;)  I would offer up Castellanos all day long for a top 3 closer or a couple of middle men.  This may be as close as we get to winning a WS so it may be time to go all-in.
  • Like the hire and agree about the bullpen. I would like to see if we could get Joe Nathan as a FA. Move Benoit (need to sign him) back to set up guy; AA, Smyly, and Rondon for the seventh and get another lefty specialist. Then trade Nick C for a LF. Agree that the timeline for a WS is a short one.
