Press Release- Men’s Swimming and Diving Claims Michigan’s 54th Team National Championship

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The University of Michigan men’s swimming and diving team dominated the field at the 2013 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, winning the school’s 54th team national title on Saturday evening (March 30). The Wolverines won the championship by accumulating 480 points. U-M placed first followed by California (406.5) and Arizona (313.5) at the IU Natatorium and IUPUI Sports Complex in Indianapolis, Ind.

“This is a tremendous accomplishment for our men’s swimming and diving program,” said Dave Brandon, the Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics. “We aspire to win championships at Michigan and these student-athletes have performed at a high level all season. Mike Bottom and the coaching staff have built a championship program and this is the culmination of their hard work and effort. Congratulations to everyone associated with the program. We look forward to celebrating their success.”

The men’s swimming and diving team won their school record 19th national title. Michigan has won 12 NCAA championships in its history (1937-41, '48, '57-59, '61, '95, 2013), the most by a Big Ten school. Prior to 1937 when NCAA championships had not yet become official, Michigan won seven additional titles (1927-28, '31-32, '34-36).

The men’s gymnastics team won the last NCAA Team Championship for the Wolverines, earning the crown in 2010.
