This isn’t an outreach program between Big Ten schools and their Division III neighbors. It’s one possible future Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany envisions if the plaintiffs prevail in Ed O’Bannon vs. the NCAA. In a declaration filed last week in federal court in support of the NCAA’s motion against class certification, Delany threatened that any outcome that results in athletes getting a piece of the schools’ television revenue could force the schools of the Big Ten to de-emphasize athletics as the Ivy League’s schools did decades ago.

“…it has been my longstanding belief that The Big Ten’s schools would forgo the revenues in those circumstances and instead take steps to downsize the scope, breadth and activity of their athletic programs,” Delany wrote. “Several alternatives to a ‘pay for play’ model exist, such as the Division III model, which does not offer any athletics-based grants-in-aid, and, among others, a need-based financial model. These alternatives would, in my view, be more consistent with The Big Ten’s philosophy that the educational and lifetime economic benefits associated with a university education are the appropriate quid pro quo for its student athletes.”

The results of high profile games have been making the Big Ten irrelevant.  All kidding aside, I can't see this happening. Schools like UM and pOSU make too much green to just downgrade into mediocrity. If this were to happen I think a lot of these schools would retract from the Big Ten.

I know it's a worst-case scenario but, honestly, don't think I could continue being a college football fanatic, if such an option was adopted by the B1G

The lawsuit is for 50 percent of all TV revenue to go to the players?????  While Mich and Ohio State can afford to pay football and basketball players ( I doubt they could afford to pay all sports men/women) so many athletic departments barely break even if not operate at a lose....  
 
If somehow the players win there lawsuit, it would be cheaper probably to drop big time sports for the schools... again I'm talking the average school.

Personally, I think the B1G should just cut ties with Deleny...

Having grown up in Michigan, this reminds me of the oft-repeated scenario where school boards claim that, if the millage doesn't pass, the first thing to go will be the football team and the band. Delany is doing the same thing, just with more zeros.

That's part of the problem them. Schools  have gotten into the habit of not only subsiding  their athletic departments, but capital campaigns and other projects on campus. Schools prop themselves up on the backs of football and basketball players. That wasn't always the case. Michigan stadium wasn't built on the basis of ticket sales or TV revenue. Everyone is getting fat and happy, and rich, off the backs of football and basketball players. Eventually your workforce wises the hell up.
 
Revenue from this upcoming playoff could pay for every scholarship football/basketball athlete and plus a stipend (hell it could probably pay for every D1 athlete period). We're talking $400-$600 million a year. Meanwhile Deleny cries poor.

Isn’t this what President Duderstadt referred to about 20 years ago when he remarked that university athletics were a "corrosive example of entertainment culture"  that "imposes on the university an alien set of values, a culture that really is not conducive to the educational mission of university."  Jedgoblu
