A great read.

Cass Tech has come along way. They always had plenty of talent, more than most of the teams they played, but weren't well coached. Wilcher did his best but his assistants were really holding the team back. Hopefully the change at Tech leads to more productive and more well developed players coming to Michigan.

Wilcher knew he had to do something to turn his team's fortunes — not just for that season, but for the long term. He thought the team needed a dramatic change to guide the program in the right direction.

"Everything we did, we just scrapped it," he said. "I said we were going to do the spread offense."

At Cass Tech, there wasn't a change only in offensive philosophy. Wilcher's makeover also involved improving the attitudes of his players, a redoubling of his efforts in developing their football skills, and acquiring assistant coaches who bought into his way of thinking.

"He figured out it was best to sever ties with some coaches instead of allowing his staff to be made up of his friends," said Rod Oden, who was head coach for seven years at Detroit Crockett before taking over this season at East English Village.

He was one of my favorite not-so-famous RB's at Michigan. (Jon Vaughn being the other)  Dude had wicked speed but was stuck behind Jamie Morris.  I always thought he could have been a really good one but never got much playing time.  Wilcher has done a good job at Cass Tech.

Dicks Sports Goods did an HBO Hard Knocks like documentary on Cass Tech preparation for the season. Thomas Wilcher is not a man to be messed with, really good stuff. Wonder how long before someone tries to pluck him out of there.

Cass won its 2nd straight state championship yesterday.  36-21 against the same Detroit Catholic Central team it beat a year ago.
