Beginning of the end of college football?

The author of Friday Night Lights thinks college football should be banned. There could be a quick ground swell of support for thoughts like his. http://now.msn.com/now-pl./0506-bissinger-cfb.aspx Your thoughts?

I read the article and the editorial. I agree with him in principle, but again it comes down to $$. Just like I knew there wouldn't be a lockout in the NFL because there's too much $$ on the line, the same goes here. What he dances around is why just football, why not collegiate basketball, baseball, or hockey? He hints at that football athletes aren't student athletes and in cutting other programs "where those athletes graduate" to save football, universities are cheating the rest of their student bodies. His target is football, but if Duke got rid of football, would it really hurt them. He opens a can of worms to ban collegiate sports as a whole.

I thought for sure this was going to be based around head injuries, NFL players and suicides, etc etc. Then I looked it up. This guy is a blow hard. He's complaining about money and academics-THAT'S real original. Yes, we all know college football is all about money and yes, we also know academics RARELY enter into it.

Totally agree with you on why he chooses to dance around collegiate basketball. Collegiate hockey and baseball are hardly comparable along the lines of collegiate football and basketball. But if this guy wants to talk about money in collegiate sports, has he seen how much the NCAA makes off of their television contract for the NCAA Basketball Tournament? Oh, and how about the one and done UK to the NBA pipeline? Yeah, college basketball is soooo much more about the student athelte????

UMWingedHelmet ScottsdaleBlue There will be no support for this Go Blue!! Don't kid yourself. There are many factions in this country who think football is too brutal. But that's a different topic. I get the discussion where this subject is concerned as we're slowly starting to see the long-term effects from guys running into each other at a hundred miles an hour. I also know that nobody is forcing these guys to play and there are a LOT of guys who will gladly accept the long-term risks for a chance at the NFL. But that's not what this guy talks about. He talks about the student-athlete and money and let's face it, the minute the discussion of money comes up regarding big-time college football AND basketball, the NCAA are the smartest guys in the room. (for a change)

It will never happen but if it did the reason would be based on the kind of lawsuits that are going on right now. Brain damage, suicides and the like are the kinds of things that get things shut down. It could become simply too expensive for schools and/or the NFL to operate. They already have massive liability insurance but if the medical field comes out in force arguing that football causes suicides and other catastrophic issues (which I don't doubt actually) then there could be a big change. Having guys sign waivers is not going to be enough. Lawyers could bring down football, not some big movement to return to amateur athletics.
