Roy Roundtree eyes No. 1 jersey Saturday, April 14, 2012 11:08 AM (permalink)

Roy Roundtree wants to wear the No. 1 jersey for the Michigan football team, and not just because of the prestige attached to it at his school.
He grew up idolizing the last guy who wore it.

You can't hate on the kid for embracing the tradition.  And anything that makes these kids work harder to achieve on the field is good for Michigan football.

I think we should retire it personally. It has become much bigger than originally intended and is now a very individualistic thing.

Its semi retired right now.

Hoke was quietly infuriated that he was even asked about the #1 jersey yesterday.

I completely get what you are saying.  But, so is the Heisman Trophy and every other individual award in college football.  Because we are Michigan and are about THE TEAM! THE TEAM! THE TEAM!, should we discourage our players from achieving those individual honors as well?

Back up the train a second....Did you just compare the Heisman Trophy to Michigan's #1 jersey?

Go Blue!!

That's not at all the same thing. We're talking about an internal thing, those are external awards.

If "earning" the #1 was about what it was originally intended I wouldn't have a problem with it. It stopped being about work ethic and dedication a long time ago.

The kid all but earned it at the ND game imo, that play is right up there in the lore of MEEECHIGAN football, like AC's catch against Indiana, Braylons TD's catchs against MSu in the triple OT game. I f the kid wants it, he is respectful enough to understand what it means to wear it, why not? The kid wants to be the #1, he is more than capable of upholding the tradition as far as I am concerned.

Heres a question I pose, Why SHOULDNT he get it?

I like Hoke's answer- there are 115 guys in this program who are working for the #1 jersey.

Personally, I like the #1 jersey being part of Michigan football but Hoke doesn't seem real enthused about it. *IF* Roundtree ends up wearing the #1 jersey you can be darn sure that Hoke believes he's done more than enough to earn it.

Hoke absolutely hated the jersey fiasco for the MSU game. He thought it was unneeded distraction. We'll have to see how he handles this- my guess is he might announce it one way or the other at Media Day in the summer.

you can't be serious. . . are you?  are you really being serious?

you think RR earned the #1 jersey because of one play?  he was, AT BEST, the 3rd best WR last year (IMO, 4th).  he's not very strong (being generous), drops a lot of balls, and catches more with his body than snag the ball from the air with his hands.   he has a CRAP load to prove before he's even CONSIDERED for the #1 jersey

FWIW, Hoke did give some praises towards Roundtree and how much he has improved in the presser after the Spring Game...

And there the problem is ...
If its all about Work Ethic, Leadership, Dedication to me that's all Kovacs right there but hey hes not a WR  ..
If Roundtree wants it let him have it but If I was Hoke and no one wanted it ( now or in the future) , I would just let it fade away.....

Edit:
Oh and Hoke being a " Michigan Man" and have a winning record last year, he could VERY easily say " Thanks Braylon  but no thanks" and no one would care,,,, but Braylon that is lol

Why are you attacking me? I made my opinion, you can agree with it or disagree with it, I really dont care which, but you could show some respect for my opinion. As I would of yours of course, and not to just try to make me look like an idiot. Hes well deserving.

What the hell, give it to Roundtree.  Other than the fans nobody seems to care or embrace this idea.  Carr didn't.  He used it to motivate Edwards but for several years it went either unoccupied or given to just anybody. (see: Tyrone Butterfield)  Rodriguez didn't embrace it and now it appears Hoke isn't all that into it either.  But if it can somehow make Roundtree a better receiver, give it to him.  The dude has room for improvement so what the hell.  It's just a number.

Well said TK.  I too could give a rat's a$$ about it.  If you can use it as a motivator to get a player to improve, great.  But was the #1 jersey EVER something players strived for outside of the locker room?  Other than Braylon, I don't remember a WR publicly making it known that he wanted the #1 jersey.  Lloyd turned it into a motivator to Braylon to make him improve as a receiver and actually earn the right to wear the #1 jersey.  But outside of that example, I don't recall any previous Michigan receivers publicly calling out to want the #1.  It imakes for a nice debate for us fans to discuss who we think is most deserving of wearing the #1 jersey each and every year, but as Harbaugh04 pointed out, Kovacks is probably the most deserving of any player on the team to don the #1 jersey, but he isn't a receiver...

Just because Braylon has tried to make the #1 jersey into a steeped Michigan tradition does not make it so.

GO BLUE!!!
