Brady Hoke: Michigan football team's lines 'not very good right now' Thursday, April 12, 2012 8:57 AM (permalink)

"On either side, it's not very good right now, I can tell you that," Hoke said Tuesday afternoon on a teleconference with reporters. "I think the kids are working, I think they're coming in here with energy and all those things, but I think the expectation level, how physical we want to be as a football team, I would say we're not where we need to be."

Shocker. I think we all saw this coming from a mile away. When a walk-on is putting up a serious challenge for a starting spot on your o-line, you have no depth there.

Pipkins will be starting at one of the DT spots by the time that conference play begins, imho.

IMO, this is just coach speak.  What is he going to say?  Is he going to heap praises on them?  It's just spring practice.  This seems like typical motivational speak to get his team to work harder.

I`m less worried about the O-line than the D-line. While I`m sure the O-line is not exactly where he wants it, I`m not sure it can be until some of the players graduate and others come on board. We're never going to consistently blow people off the ball with this group IMO. The O-line is more than capable of production though.

The D-line is a legitimate issue though.

Agreed, 90%, Oline, I believe we are "meshing" and that takes time, especially replacing a center.

Dline, I agree, hes definitely using psychology there. I think we got some talent to work with, maybe hes just kinda calling them out a little. all about motivation to get better.

Im with ya, Oline concerns me wayyy less than Dline... I heard coach hoke saying how good the new center is doing (cant remember his name....brain fart)....D line, I agree, I think Pipkins will see some playing time probably asap, if anything just as a big body to relieve BWC.

It's spring football. The intensity and technique sharpness is never going to be where the coaches want it. I could have gone 25 for 25 in 7 on 7 and 14-14 in Team Drills and the coaches were still pissed off at me during my spring ball. Probably because I was still half cocked from the night before and they knew it, but that's neither here nor there. Haha

Go Blue!!

Ohio St.'s actions are not unlike their lower intestine: stinky and loaded with danger.

we should be prepared to have teams run all over us this season.  Our offense is going to need serious "ball control" to help keep the defense off the field

I agree that the D-line concerns me far more than the O-line.  But, with that said, I am happy that we have a head coach whose emphasis is on coaching the d-line and an d-coordinator whose emphasis is on coaching the d-line.  While there are questions about how Roh and Black will perform moving inside, I have confidence that they should do well given how well we saw VanBergen do when he moved from the edge to the inside.

I think it's just coach's banter. What he's really saying is "We're not settled on any side of the ball." Meaning their going to pick & choose starters.

Werent we "not very good right now" last season at this point too??  We will probably "not be a very good team right now" next year, and the following year........

He also said an 11-2 season with a win over Ohio and a Sugar Bowl victory was a failure of a season because they didn't reach their goal of a B1G championship.  Total coach speak and I have no problem with it if it keeps the players motivated to improve...

I'm not upset with what Hoke said.  In fact, I'm glad he is pointing out that last season was a failure because the team didn't reach their main goal which was a B1G championship.  I loved hearing him being interviewed this morning on ESPNU and them asking him if he really felt an 11-2 season with a BCS bowl win was truly a failure and he, matter of factly, said yes it was because they didn't reach their goal of a B1G championship.  I just love that about Hoke!

This is a new team. New players. New opponents. New epectations. Bama is not the champ. There is no champ this year. It's TBD. I don't care what happened last year. MANY things will change between now and August and MANY things will change between then and when we play each and every opponent.
