The NCAA has placed North Carolina's football program on three years' probation and banned it from the 2012 postseason, the governing body announced Monday...

In its report, the Committee on Infractions found:
•  A former tutor "constructed significant parts of writing assignments" for three players, provided more than $4,000 in impermissible benefits to players after she graduated and refused to cooperate with the investigation.
•  Seven players accepted more than $27,500 in benefits, including cash, flights, meals, lodging, athletic training, admission to clubs and jewelry. One player received more than $13,500 in cash and gifts.
•  The program allowed a former player, who was determined by the NCAA to be an agent runner, to have regular access to current student-athletes at its athletic facilities without any oversight.

DAMN...

Having grown up a Michigan football fan & UNC basketball fan...and with legends like Bo & Dean Smith at the helm...NEVER thought I'd see the day when both would be hit with probation!

Of course, the Michigan probation was a TOTAL joke but still. Shame on you, Roy Williams...I'm sure Dean Smith is disappointed!

Ooops

I thought it was the basketball team, lol. Knew the NCAA was going to come down hard on UNC football...thanks to Butch Davis!

I'd hardly call that getting slammed.  UNC got off lightly IMO.  Oh, and I hate Duke...

Nothing that includes a bowl ban is ever light. With the death penalty now off the table a bowl ban is a harsh as it gets.

I dont really like Duke, I respect coach K's longivity and his comittment to his school by not leaving for the NBA for more $$$. Kinda reminds me of Bo. Plus, hes a pretty damned good coach too, love him or hate him, you have to admit that at least. I think he is good for college basketball too.

I used to cheer for UNC, but when they fired daughtery for williams, I tuned out. I thought he deserved another 2 years with his players at least. You see what williams did with his recruits too.

I get it, but when you compare their punishment to what the NCAA handed down to USC, this seems light.  No scholly losses?  THAT is where it hurts...

I don't really have anything against Coach K per se.  You are right in that he is a damn fine coach.  I guess my feelings towards the Dookies go back to the Fab 5 days and some of their players like Grant Hill acting as if what was going on at Michigan was bad for basketball.  Turns out, he was right in regards to the Fab 5 being bad, especially for Michigan basketball , but I just never cared for how Duke players think they do no wrong and you especially see that during games when they usually have an advantage of playing 8 on 5 (especially at Cameron).

As for the Daugherty firing, I would liken that to what we saw this past year with what Hoke did with RichRod's recruits.  Just my opinion, but I didn't see Daugherty winning a NC like Williams was able to do with Daugherty's recruits.  Not to mention, Williams has won with his own recruits as well since he's been at UNC and is poised to make a run at a 3rd this year.

There was a scathing artile in cnn/si, in which the author noted that the only seaming difference between usc penalties & what osu/nc got...is cooperation with the Ncaa. So basically, if you massage their egos, all you will get is a bowl ban, and a few schollies.
Personally I feel a multi year bowl ban is the real ticket to punishment. For example, if you gave a team a 3 year bowl ban, that all by itself would be like a schollie reduction, as people wouldn't want to come and play there....

Yeah, you make a good point about RW winning one with his own kids, wouldve Daughtery won a NC with that line up? Possibly, did he get a fair shake at it, no. Just the classless way his firing was handled made me jump off the bandwagon. That was the talk of the town down here for at least 2 years. Maybe Im more saturated in the "negativity" than most? I dunno, just looked classless to me.
