Michigan a 5 1/2-point underdog at No. 17 Notre Dame - Monday, September 01, 2014 7:56 AM
0
NN ARBOR -- Michigan's first big road test of the season is a week away, and the Wolverines will enter it as an underdog.
Michigan opened as a 6-point underdog for its upcoming game at No. 17 Notre Dame on Saturday (7:30 p.m., ESPN). The line subsequently moved down to 5 1/2 points later Sunday afternoon, per VegasInsider.com.
The unranked Wolverines beat Appalachian State, 52-14, at home on Saturday. Notre Dame topped Rice, 48-17 in South Bend, Indiana.
Notre Dame is currently without five members of its roster, including three starters, due to an ongoing academic scandal investigation.
Fighting Irish quarterback Everett Golson, who missed all of last season due to academic troubles, returned Saturday against Rice -- going 14 of 22 for 295 yards and two touchdowns. Golson also ran for 41 yards and three more touchdowns as the Fighting Irish put up 576 yards of total offense.
Saturday's game will be the final installment of the current Michigan-Notre Dame series, as the Fighting Irish opted out of the current deal prior to the 2012 game in South Bend.
Michigan leads the all-time series 24-16-1. The Wolverines are 9-9-1 all-time in South Bend.

Who knows what's gonna happen in this one.  Neither team played a tough opener.  UM should win, based on talent and the fact the Domers are missing players, but this is a road game against a ranked team and the Hoke-led Wolverines have had a hard enough time beating any team on the road the last 3 years let alone a ranked team.

Would be nice to end the series not only with a winning record overall, but also a winning record in South Bend.

I'll say Michigan wins a close one, but it takes some heroics from Gardner's legs to get it done.  At the very least, i would take Michigan and the 5.5 right now.

I believe the Wolverines are going to surprise  a lot of teams and a lot of us this year.  It's just a good feeling about their approach this season.  A large (no pun in intended) addition by subtraction in Al Borges leaving and Nuss being here.

UM will beat the Domers by 4-7 points.

What a glorious day that was. My best friend is a ND fan and was at the game. I kept sending him texts... he never replied.

This will be the first true test to see if they are improving its gonna be close. If UM does not turn it over they should win because I think this is a classic UMv ND game of turnovers and low scoring

ND is without its top edge rusher, WR, and cover CB. We should just mail in the season if we can't get this one done, road game or not. Managing the two DTs will be key, we can scheme away from Jaylon Smith.

Golston made a killing thus weekend scrambling and making plays downfield so keeping him contained will be critical defensively. I wonder if we'll keep playing man to man and devote a spy or play zone to keep eyes on #5

We should just mail in the season if we can't get this one done, road game or not.

I felt the same way about the trip to Happy Valley last year, and in retrospect they did mail in the rest of the season.

Players get in trouble, and ND just lets them skate.

When ND suspends players, they let them skate.

The boys in Vegas know what they're talking about, they didn't build those casinos by being morons.

Frankly I'm surprised the line isn't higher. I'm more optimistic now that I've seen the team than I was before the season. However, the bottom line is this is still a fairly weak team that can't win on the road heading to ND to play a night game against a top 25 team. The win against App St was nice but let's not get carried away.

I was reading that those players might be back for this game FWIW.  I do know that their starting safety is out with a knee sprain.
