Unbridled optimism! - Tuesday, August 12, 2014 10:07 AM

So, I know we should all be worrying daily about development on the offensive line, etc, but I think perhaps one of the biggest themes currently flying under the radar this year is that this defense is going to be good.  Like scary good.  There's not a team in the conference I can name with more talent in the back seven and we are DEEP on the d-line.  Combine that with Mattison's ability as a DC and I can't help but be excited.  Simply put, I think the D is going to flat out win us some football games this year and give the offense some time to find its feet early in the season.  Maize 'n Blue colored glasses?  Sure, but I'll throw it out there now in August: I think by the time we roll into November, this will be the best defensive unit in the conference.  Glass half full Tuesday, Go Blue!

Only thing that worries me defensively is lack of playmakers. We have a BUNCH of good players, not sure how many great ones. However, a bunch of good players can make a great unit.

MSU seems to do just fine with a lot less, so...  I'm optimistic too.

HAHA….although, I do agree that our D should be sneaky good this year….and when I say sneaky, I mean teams are going to under estimate our D and we will shut some teams down.

Here’s another kool-aid Tuesday take….last year our OL maybe had some promise in fall camp because our DL was weak and didn’t have very much depth (that was evident in not being able to get to the QB all season…although we were pretty good at shutting down the run most of the season). So maybe this spring/fall…our DL is that much more improved, they are really putting pressure on the OL, thus the reason they have looked so sh*tty thus far. In the end, that can only help the OL improve.

Did someone sprinkle fairy dust on my desk this morning?

Seems like the D is going to be playing a lot more aggressively this year-especially in the secondary. Mattison has talked repeatedly about how they had to play off last season and that they let the receivers catch the ball in front of them. Seems he is ready to crank up the pressure like in 2011.

That is everything I’m reading as well….and we also have to remember that our defense probably has the most senior leadership and experience of any unit. Mattison has been pretty blunt that he is going to play aggressive. And I’ve even heard him say all the crazy stuff he plans to do with Peppers at the nickel. As crazy as it sounds, one of my concerns on that side of the ball is Ryan moving to Mike…I think it will take him a few games to feel comfortable and with ND second up on the docket, there isn’t much time to not be confident.

Are we talking Buddy Ryan/Arizona Cardinals aggressive? I remember watching him blitz 10 guys once in a while. Just nutty.

I would like to see them have the ability to amp up the pressure. If we're churning out "W"s in games where the defense scores more than the offense, I'm cool with that.

Can the offense pick up enough first downs to keep the D off the field ?? One of last years problems was, the O couldn't keep the D off the field.

Good, I better see lots of press coverage this year. It was frustrating watching our DB's play 10-12 yards off the line last year.

I'm not seeing it.  Our D line is very average, slow LB's and a suspect secondary.  We may be deep but like UMWolverine5 said, where's the play makers?  I agree the D will be the strength of this team and that's what worries me.  Sorry guys-not getting sucked in just yet.  I guess the good news is with our schedule there's not an offensive powerhouse to be found anywhere so the D just needs to be above average.

To be honest as a whole I don't know what to think. I have been watching UM a long time and this is the first time I can say I wouldn't be surprised at 6-6 or 11-1. Do I thnk they have talent yes. But the coaching staff has shown the ability to underdevelop as well.

If I were DB I would just say point blank beat OSU @ the shoe and we are good. that way you have 13 weeks to prepare.

Not really sure what they are gonna do taking the wait and see...

Do you think that Hoke maybe publicly say the O line is unsettled to throw off the competition?

I'm be happy with more stops on third down against teams with any semblance of a passing game.

Beat OSU at the shoe and I'll take a 6-6.
