Some wonderful quotes from Dear Leader today - Sunday, August 10, 2014 7:40 PM
0
http://bigstory.ap.org/ar...blishes-tough-identity

Some highlights:

"I don't think it is a pivotal year," Brandon said Sunday in an interview with The Associated Press. "It is another year to make progress and show growth with more recruits who are the type of athletes he wants for his style of play."

"Sadly, there are people who only care about wins and losses," Brandon said. "Part of Brady's job description is to teach life lessons that help young men become successful in life, and he's doing a great job at that."

I don't know about you, but that just inspires so much confidence in me. I feel so energized for the season after reading that!

If it's not about winning and losing why do they always keep score?

Hoke may very well suck (and it appears that he does) but Brandon is a thousand times worse.

Of all the things we joke about this is the worst thing I've ever heard. This is what somebody says after they've been defeated and given up. This guy is useless and the university should let him go.

I clearly paid $85 dollars on my Braylon Edwards jersey because he learned a lot about life while at Michigan.. Not because of his performances against Ohio in 03' and Sparty in 04'. He clearly "learned" a lot about good decisions during his time at Michigan.. Strip clubs, guns, and DUI's is apparently what they teach you at Michigan huh Dave?

are you guys this delusional all the time?  what do you want him to say?  "I understand if UM doesn't win, I might have to fire Hoke.  Hell, they might fire my a** also."

brandon is not THIS oblivious to the state of the program.  he knows, just like everyone else, that this year is, in fact, VERY pivotal, but he can't necessarily say that to the media and create potential unrest, especially in regards to recruiting.

and in case anyone's wondering, no, I'm not really a huge fan of Brandon

So this pretty much confirms that the piece from the FreeP you posted last week did come from the AD, and this will be the main talking point if the team stinks up the joint again this year.

The subtext appears to be that not only is Hoke gone if the teams fails but Bramdumb's going with him.

Spoken like a true CEO.  His answer should have been: "Of course this is an important year.  Every year at Michigan is an important year.  This is Michigan."  Doesn't have to call it pivotal, doesn't put Hoke on the hot seat publicly (he can't do that no matter how much we want him to) and nobody freaks out.   But he's an idiot with an out of control ego who now (apparently) is in the excuse business.

I honestly don't have an issue with the first statement. I don't expect DB to put Hoke on notice or say anything in public that could be construed as pressure.dfdf

The "sadly there are people who only care about wins and losses" statement is absurd but I guess predictable given what's been said over the last year or so. If the life lesson Hoke has been teaching guys is about losing then yeah, he's done a great job. Hoke is a football coach not a pastor or counselor. His job is to win football games, the rest is secondary.

I tend to agree with MJackson.  What is he going to say?  This is typical speak from an AD showing support of their coach until the very end.  Owners do it too.  They never come out and say their coach has to win or else they will be fired.  These coaches are under enough pressure and most of the time they know they either produce or they will be fired.

I will say also that I too am not a fan of Dave Brandon and comments like this do nothing to change my opinion that he is more concerned about how much money Michigan is making as opposed to putting a winning product on the field.  I don't care how great of a job The J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family Head Football Coach is doing at teaching life lessons to  the young men on his football team, it IS about wins and losses for us the fans who are shelling out more and more each and every season for tickets to watch a team produce on the football field!

I realize he's done a lot as AD in facilities upgrades all across the Michigan Athletics Department, but ultimately, facilities upgrades are not what will define his legacy.  If Hoke doesn't show signs of turning things around this season and Brandon continues to support HIS guy, unfortunately, his legacy will be one of being at the helm of a mediocre period of Michigan football despite having facilities that rival the best programs in the country...

Oh, and one last thing about Brandon's comments.  Is the job of your J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family Head Football Coach to just teach young men life lessons?  Is it not the job of your J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family Head Football Coach to also develop the skills of these athletes ON the football field???  Are we as fans more concerned about how these athletes develop off the field or on the field???  I will say for myself, I'm sick of seeing class after class of highly rated recruits sign only to never live up to their potential once they get to Michigan.  If Hoke can't start proving that he can develop the skills of these athletes ON the field, I want him gone, end of story...

Dear TK,

We here at Michigan would like to know if you would be interested in some form of PR for our athletic dept? We can't afford to pay you in cash, but you can take all the dominoes fresh $5 pizzas leftover at the end of the day.

Sincerely,

DB

First of all, if you honestly believe that Brandon only cares about making money for the department then you can't in the same breath say he doesn't care about winning. He knows if the football team doesn't win he can't bring in money.

Secondly, you think if the football team doesn't win that Brandon will be fired...from the new president that has never been at a school with big time athletics? Who clearly isn't a huge supporter is athletics in general? Yeah, don't think so.

BHF, he's the one quoted as saying, "Some people only care about wins and losses..."  He is also the one quoted as saying, "It is another year to make progress and show growth with more recruits who are the type of athletes he wants for his style of play."

I'm sorry, but when exactly has this team made progress and shown growth under Hoke?  Last time I checked, we have regressed each year record wise going from 11-2 to 8-5 to last year's stellar 7-6.  Where's the progress and growth???  It's been argued that Hoke hasn't had a full deck to work with and I can accept that to a certain degree.  But, for me, those excuses are over starting this year.  I NEED to start seeing some of these star players Hoke has been recruiting actually develop into stars at the college level.  It is time for Hoke to show us that he CAN develop these young men to become talented football players.  It's as if Brandon is watching something completely different when he makes comments like he was quoted in the OP of this thread.  The problem is, there has NOT been any progress in the last 3 years and that is what most of us fans are clamoring to see this year.  Show me some freaking progress instead of telling us fairy tales about the progress and growth this team is making!

Because RR wasn't Brandon's boy.

Brady is Brandon's pick so of course he is going to have a hard time checking his ego at the door and admitting that Hoke was not the right hire...

But when given the choice by the President, if the season isn't successful, "Fire Hoke and save your job or I'm firing you and then Hoke."  That ego will be checked at the door.

I'm not sure the new President even knows what a first down is. I wouldn't bank on him pushing to fire anyone that's related to athletics. He's nothing like MSC who was VERY involved.

Now if the regents turn on Brandon en masse then you may see something.

Without rehashing an entire offseason of disagreements, the AD seems to be keenly aware that the situation here was more than a simple turn-around job.  I find that Brandon's message is often poorly delivered despite usually containing a theme or point that makes some sense.  I have no problem with him saying Hoke's job isn't in jeopardy this season (it isn't and won't be, that was made abundantly clear from the get go).  What is irksome is that he continually goes a bridge too far to prove that's the case.  The stuff about W's and L's is just something he shouldn't have uttered, exactly like TK said, his point could've easily been made without going there.  Does it mean that Dave Brandon doesn't care about the team winning?  Of course not.  He's attempting to communicate that his coach is not in a position where it's win or you're fired and he's doing it poorly.

Blacksheep, sorry, 8-4 with loses to Moo and OSU will not get BH fired. I'm afraid 8-4 means that UM is making progress, ergo Hoke gets at least another year to prove himself. Just MHO.

Marty I agree, this year Hoke can't play the he doesn't have his players, or we are too young. But Hoke had to build this program from nothing so he had to get the talent here and then have that talent grow up. He finally has juniors now so it is time to produce.

I'm fairly convinced Hoke could go 4-8 and he'll be back again in '15.  And yes, we have a new president that doesn't give a toss about football but he will and it won't take long.  Too much revenue at stake and too many boosters with deep pockets who live and die with this football program to ignore.  He can handle the academics but in the end he'll learn to stay the hell out of the way of the football program, just like every big time football school president across the country.  Brandon is a lot of things but stupid isn't one of them.
