Michigan coach Brady Hoke said Wednesday that sophomore safety Delano Hill will be out indefinitely after breaking his jaw during football-related drill late in the summer just before the start of fall camp.

"Delano Hill broke his jaw the last two weeks of summer, he'll be out (for a while)," Hoke said. "He could be ready for Appalachian State (on Aug. 30), we'll just see.

"(True freshman) Brandon Watson has more opportunity now, as far as where he's at," Hoke said. "Dymonte, Jeremy Clark (free safety), Jarrod Wilson and Brandon are taking most of the reps right now (at both safety spots).

It's now or never for Dymonte Thomas. We shouldn't even be talking about a guy like Watson being in the mix. You have to have a high hit rate for your most talented prospects. You don't land many to begin with and their ceilings are so much higher than the other guys on your roster.

Curt Mallory needs to earn his salary!

just to be clear, who are you blaming more, curt mallory or dymonte?

also, there's a couple of "in the know" guys on scout who are REAAALLLY high on delano, stating that he's one of the most athletic guys on the team, and the coaches rave about him

It's kind of a chicken and egg argument. Dymonte is responsible for his level of play but it's also Mallory's job to have him and the others ready to play. The safety play has been average at best and it spans multiple safeties over a number of years so Dymonte would be another in a long list if he doesn't play well which falls back on the coaches that are responsible for the unit as a whole. I like Hill's skill-set but he shouldn't be ahead of Thomas at this point in their careers. Not only does Thomas have more natural ability (not the only factor that matters), he enrolled early and got a jump-start to his career.

p.s I take all preseason pub with a grain of salt after the praise heaped on guys like Frank Clark, James Ross, and Jarrod Wilson this time last year.
