“What people don’t realize, I wear a headset when I need to wear a headset,” Hoke responded, adding, “I have a guy behind me who is telling me every call. When guys come off the field, when guys are on the sideline -- (not wearing a headset) allows me to coach.”

Sorry but is this really a major issue? Would anybody care about a headset if Hoke was winning 10+ games a year...along with a B1G championship or two?

Bobby Bowden didn't even know half the teams name when he coached at fsu. Win, and no one cares at all.

^^ no headset, no BIG champs either......lol

Its not that big of a deal to not wear one, but at least pay attention. To the damn game and call your timeouts in a timely matter, preferably with a since of urgency. That's all.

Ron English wore a headset every game he coached at EMU and it got him 11 wins....in 5 years.

The headset "problem" is twofold:

1) Appearences. Largely irrelevant, but it conveys a sense of aloofness from the head coach; the sense that he isn't involved with what's going on. And when what's going on is awful, it looks worse that Hoke is basically just standing there clapping (as it appears on TV).

2) The relevant part: Hoke is comfortable delegating basically 100% of the gameplan to his coordinators. There's nothing wrong with that approach.....if you have competent coordinators. For three years, Hoke gave Al Borges the keys to the car and didn't sit in the passenger seat and make sure Borges didn't crash it.

Ultimately, it boils down to what you think of Hoke as a coach. Do you think him being on the headset for the whole game would have the difference in any of the losses over the last three years? I tend to doubt it, because Mattison and Borges have been carrying out the plan Hoke has laid out for them. And I don't know of anybody that thinks of Brady Hoke as some sort of football genius. I'm not sure what would've been different these last three years if Hoke wore the headset.

The absence of a headset isn't the issue. The absence of the grey matter between the headset, you know if he bothered to wear one, is the issue.

If I thought Hoke had something to add on gameday and was choosing not participate then I`d have a bigger issue with him not wearing a headset. By his own admission Hoke is a "not a scheme guy", he's not going to suddenly take over playcalling on either side of the ball.

It's all a perception thing.

And perception is reality and the reality is he's a mediocre coach.  (and I'm being as kind as I can possibly be.)

When he was asleep on the sidelines for the major timeout we needed at the PSU game, wouldve been nice to see him with a headset on, maybe somebody couldve spoken up "hey coach, you might wanna call a timeout"...... Thats really the only problem I have with the no headset thing, we blew not just one but 2 costly timeouts last season. Could those blunders been avoided with a headset on? Maybe, maybe not. But if it couldve, that reason alone is an adequate reason alone to wear one all season. just my .02
