A new defense filing in the case involving rape charges against four former Vanderbilt players claims that current Penn State coach James Franklin contacted the alleged victim shortly after the incident.

It was part of an assertion that had Franklin denying he "did something wrong" later Tuesday night, after defense attorneys for Brandon Vandenburg -- one of four former Commodores charged with five counts of aggravated rape stemming from an alleged on-campus assault against a 21-year-old female student last June -- asked the court to dismiss the charges because the prosecution failed to preserve key evidence.

In the filing, the defense says Franklin and strength coach Dwight Galt -- who left Vandy for the same jobs at Penn State this winter -- talked to the alleged victim four days after the rape during a medical examination.

Franklin and Galt told the victim "that they cared about her because she assisted them with recruiting," according to the filing. Later, the defense said, "Coach Franklin called her in for a private meeting and told her he wanted her to get 15 pretty girls together and form a team to assist with the recruiting even though he knew it was against the rules. He added that all the other colleges did it."

"The allegations that I did something wrong are simply not true," Franklin said in a statement released by Penn State. "I have cooperated fully with the authorities in this matter but, out of respect for the legal process, I am not able to comment any further."

I believe there are other rumors about Franklin and his recruiting and coaching tactics too.

What say you?

GO BLUE!

He still has to win several hundred games for that to fly.  Paterno is getting another statue put up in his honor, I read.  F**king sickening.

People always question new coaches coming into the conference. I think we have enough problems on our own hands.

There are two issues here 1) Contacting a rape victim 2) having co eds hosting football players

For point 1....he probably was reaching out to her to see how she was doing, felt a sense of responsibility because he  put her in that position.  I don't have a problem with that if indeed the contact was out of compassion.

For point 2.... If it is against the rules, then punish him for it.
As the headline reads, it seems the issue was contacting a rape victim.  Hopefully not for intimidation purposes.

I'm going to take the pessimist route.  When I read the article, my first thought is he contacted her to make sure she'd keep his name out of it.

Like politics, it's probably rare that a football coach ascends to the highest levels of his profession without cutting some corners and/or doing some things many fans would consider distasteful.

Pretty weird--and perhaps really stupid--that P$U would go anywhere near a guy with the stink of a potential sex scandal this soon after Sandusky, though.

We got our guy.

I was hoping he'd stay at Vandy until we needed a coach.

So of course he goes to another team in conference...

It was an impressive achievement, of course, and a human achievement by the members of the IBM team, but Deep Blue was only intelligent the way your programmable alarm clock is intelligent.. -Kasparov

I mentioned this to MF4L yesterday, but what has Franklin accomplished before now that makes him so attractive? Yes he won games in the SEC at a tradional bottom-feeder school, I get that. However, in his 9 win seasons they hardly beat anyone worth writing home about. Let's take a look:
2013: Austin Peay, Umass, UAB, Georgia (big win despite Georgia injuries), Florida (also lost to Georgia Southern in 2013, so), Kentucky, Tennessee, Wake Forest, and Houston
2012: Presbyterian, Mizzou (not 2013 Mizzou), Auburn (fired coach), UMass, Kentucky (fired coach), Ole Miss, Tennessee (fired coach), Wake Forest, and NC State

So in two years he had one (1!) noteworthy win. Once again I realize beating anyone while at Vandy is an accomplishment, but I still don't see why there is all the hoopla around him as a "great" coach.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A jury has convicted two ex-Vanderbilt football players of raping a former student inside a dorm room.

The jury deliberated for about three hours before finding Brandon Vandenburg and Cory Batey guilty. They face decades in prison.

Prosecutors say Vandenburg brought an unconscious 21-year-old woman he had been seeing back to his dorm room after a night of drinking in 2013 and the assault occurred as he took pictures.

Defense attorneys say Vandenburg took "deplorable" photos but did not take part in the assault. Batey testified that he was so drunk he didn't remember what happened until he later saw cellphone photos and video.

The alleged victim testified she didn't remember the alleged assault.

Two other former players are facing charges. Their trials have not been set.
