So far, all I've been impressed with is Morris' throwing mechanics have been revised, he looked like Tebow when he would wind up his throws, now it looks a lot quicker in his release and motion.

I know the spring game doesn't really show much but the defense definitely has a leg up.  Offense is doing absolutely nothing.

Marcus Ray called the scrimmage, that dude has ballooned since his playing days, guy is HUGE. He said that '97 team had 30 guys play in the NFL...now that's depth!

Gardner threw an INT on the 1st play of the scrimmage.

D dominated today.

DL is crushed the OL today.

Canteen looked awesome....dude caught a nice crossing pass from Gardner that ended up going for 40yds. He's got wheels. He needs to keep hitting the weight room...but he could be our 3rd WR in the fall. Stretches the D.

Thought the defense looked pretty solid & expect them to be very good in 2014.

Thought Hayes, Canteen & Chesson stood out on offense but it remains a major work in progress, not surprisingly.

Five months until it gets real...LOTS of work to be done but confident we can do it.

Wouldn't look into anything on offense. Coaches said before the scrimmage that they weren't going to show anything on offense, and they didnt. Very vanilla. The defense looks to be a lot more aggressive. More blitzing, and the corners were playing tight on the WRs.

I was there, and sadly, I was fairly unimpressed with anyone other than Canteen. Once the scrimmage went live, I saw dropped passes, penalties, a minimal running game (weren't we told we were going to two backs more frequently?), confusion with receivers' routes and positioning.  The defense looked ok. There was but one throw downfield, so I can't say if 2014 will be like 2013 with respect to the defensive backs getting burned on a regular basis.

My overall opinion- my kids loved the pretzels more than the scrimmage itself. I think I may have as well. Meh.

The OL did not get much of a push, but our DL looked good...the pass protection was worse than last season. It was awful. WOW! Gardner or Morris could have been sacked on 80% of passing plays if the D was allowed to hit the QB's.

Hoke and Nuss say that 85-90% of the offense is in...I sure hope today they only showed 5-10% of it...

I realize they may not have shown anything on offense...but that doesn't also mean you can't go out there and try an block somebody, make a good throw or catch a pass, does it? We looked sh*tty even with our base O, that can't be what Nuss was looking for today.

Gardner's confidence went into the tank after the 1st play and then he started forcing throws to Funchess, his safety blanket, the rest of the day....it was only a spring scrimmage, he's better than that and has played enough games that he should be able to put that sh*t behind him, get his head on straight and move on. We have some talent at WR this year...question is whether it not our OL can hold guys long enough to have whoever is in the pocket to get them the ball.

LMAO.............I expected the defense to dominate the "game," but that was sort of embarrassing.

Gallon and Funchess combined for over 2,000 receiving yards last season....most by a Michigan WR duo in the history of Michigan football. And that was with a wildly inconsistent QB and sh*tty OL.

Corners we're all over our WR's...Lewis looked good, he played man up on Funchess most of the day and that is making him a much better player.

DL isn't going to kill QB's next year, but they appear to be improved with more depth and a better rotation with upper class leadership (ala 2011). They were getting to the QB and RB's in the backfield with ease...Frank Clark could have taken DG's head off 5 times today and would simply run by and slap him on the ass, haa. Henry one time blew thru the line so quick and hard it looked like Clowney vs Smith at the Outback bowl a couple years ago...

Defense had it's moments...not perfect by any means, a lot of flags etc, but come fall, they are going to be solid and going to have to keep us in games early.

I didn't think our o line would get any worse after losing a 2 AA LT & 5sr RT?
We should see a dramatic improvement.

Here's the rub...if the OL dominates, we would be complaining about the lack of pressure and development along the DL. If the DL dominates, we would be complaining about the lack of push and development along the OL. It's a tough balance in a team scrimmage. I would love to see teams be able to have a spring game against another school. Now, that would be cool.

So, I guess the question could be...knowing the state of our team, would you have rather seen our OL dominate in the spring game instead of what happened yesterday? Would you feel more comfortable today, seeing our OL beat up on our DL in the spring game because the OL was so bad last year and any sort of improvement would be nice to see?

It's not a matter of seeing our o-line dominate.  I was hoping to see them get a push and actually sustain blocks more often than they did.  That's not a schematic thing, IMO.

I refuse to base anything on a spring game. Won't get too high, or too low.

But in reference to your question Scottsdale I would rather the defense dominate a spring game than the offense. 1) our defense was awful last year. You can't win the BIG without it. 2) the defense is always ahead of the offense at this point in the year (especially with a new offensive coordinator). Could you imagine the state of the defense if our offense had lit them up yesterday?

I liked that the defense looked to attack Saturday, something we saw very little of last year. Also, the CBs played a lot of press coverage, again something we didnt see a lot of last year. The hope being our defense can carry us long enough for the offense to figure itself out. However, they won't have long with Notre Dame being game 2.

Good thing the offense has 5 months to watch film and work with Nuss.

If the OL dominated then I would feel better going into fall.  I would also feel better if Gardner didn't throw a pick on the first play of the scrimmage.  Just doesn't feel right with him at QB this season.  Morris looked better and more comfortable.  Devin should play WR and be done with it.

I wouldn't, our D-line is average. We have significantly more natural talent on the offensive line as opposed to the defensive line. What I was looking for is progress, which should be expected for a unit with a lot of talent.

I wouldn't expect to see our D-line dominate.

All these highly touted prospects, top 100 O-Lineman, and the fact that Hoke considers himself a glorified line coach and yet we still look like crap? Either every single scout who has ranked the lineman we recruited has lied or we have a terrible coach at developing players and getting the most out of them. My money is on the latter of the two.

It's not just the opinion of the recruiting services that you would have to throw out. Most of these linemen had 25-30 offers from other major programs. Guys like Kalis, Mags, Dawson, Kugler, LTT had the who's who of college football after them. Even guys like Blake Bars and Chris Fox had offers from big time schools, with outstanding coaches that have produced top level O-line units.

Point being, all the coaches at these other schools that know what the hell they're doing would have to be wrong and suck at evaluating talent as well.

Clearly the blame is on Hoke and our other coaches, I was just handing an alternative to why else could our O-Line suck, however it was a sarcastic alternative.

From what I saw and I watched 3/4 of it is that the offense is still growing and I gave them and the OL a pass. For a minute I was getting frustrated until I figured out they were putting in a new system and new personnel. This year is squarely on the coaches and developing these players. I thought it was informative letting us know who they haven and where they have strengths and weaknesses.

at the risk of being labeled a hoke apologist, there aren't many programs who had 3 interior guys that young last year (yes, I said the dreaded 'Y' word) as UM.  the top O-lines every year usually have at least 3-4 veteran guys (aka redshirt sophomores or older), with plenty of experience.  i'm just as pis*** as everyone else is, but you can't have a strong, physical team when the core of your team is young and inexperienced.  with that being said, hoke and company need to bust their collective a** and scheme plays around the players' strengths, because there's really no reason UM should lose more than 3 games this year
