The 1 Game That Will Determine Wolverines' 2014 Season - Monday, March 24, 2014 8:41 AM

The polar vortex brought record snowfall and subarctic temperatures to Ann Arbor, Mich., this winter.
Inside Schembechler Hall, however, the heat is on the Michigan football program. Michigan’s 7-6 finish last season claimed the job of offensive coordinator Al Borges and caused the shake-up of the defensive staff.

Lose to Notre Dame and this season might get get ugly

Can someone please explain how we play MSU again away? I thought it alternates every season, yet we played them last year at their place.

With Maryland and Rutgers joining the B10 next season, schedules needed to be redone and we got compromised (f*cked). We play AT Northwestern again too.

Go Blue!!

We'll beaten ND before and it hasn't propelled us into a great year. As in most years ND is our first major test but I'd argue the Sparty game is a lot more important to the overall course of the season.

And the program.  Being 2nd best in the state sucks.

THIS!

ND is the season pacesetter, but Sparty is the program changer now.

This board is putting WAY too much into that game. They will not beat us.

no one's saying we WILL lose that game.  the only thing some of us are really saying, is that after the last several years, how can any UM fan overlook a game after seeing debacles (toledo, app st, akron, uconn, etc.)

The Appy St. game may quietly strike fear into you, but this is not the same team that shocked us years ago. They went 4-8 last season and didn't beat anyone you have ever heard of. No upset this time around. Michigan wins 63-9.

akron's record in 2012 was 1-11, (their lone win against perennial powerhouse morgan state)and in 2013 was a play away from beating michigan in the big house

What happened against Akron last season (Appy St. in 2007, etc) has no bearing on our opening game this September. They are independent of each other. New year, new team, new coaches, new players, new goals, new identity, new leaders, new trends will be set and so on and so forth.

yes, I too have become what you might call "cautiously optimistic" about Michigan football. They usually have the talent to beat just about anyone, yet all too often they seem to play down to the level of the competition (App St, Akron, UConn, Toledo) or just not be able to step up against better teams (MSU, tOSU being two glaring examples).
They could be B1G and even National contenders this coming season, or they could have another disappointing (by Michigan standards) season. It all depends on which Michigan team shows up, and how consistently they show up from game to game.

and yes, I agree that Notre Dame is important (especially at their house), but Michigan has pretty consistently beaten them lately, whereas MSU, tOSU, and Nebraska have had the upper hand against Michigan of late. I will be happy if they beat ND (I always am!) but I will be even more happy if they can win at least one of the two traditional B1G rivalry games (MSU and tOSU) this coming season. They don't play Nebraska, I would say a win against Penn St would be very nice as well, especially considering how they let it get away against them this past season.
