Michigan Tight End Jake Butt Out Indefinitely with Torn ACL - Thursday, February 13, 2014 9:21 AM
0
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan football rising sophomore tight end Jake Butt (Columbus, Ohio/Pickerington North) is out indefinitely with a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered in winter conditioning, the team announced today (Thursday, February 13).

Butt finished his freshman campaign with 20 catches for 235 yards and two touchdowns, third on the Wolverines in each category.  Butt had a season-best five catches for 85 yards and a touchdown against Ohio State.

"Jake's done a tremendous job since he's been here," said Michigan football head coach Brady Hoke. "He's worked extremely hard and gained a lot of weight to become the complete tight end he wants to be. I think he showed flashes of that towards the end of last season. This is a tough break, but because of his work ethic and attitude, the kind of young man he is, we know he will be back as soon as he can and as strong as ever."

So what is the typical rehab for this type of injury?

Should be back before conference play if he heals like Jake Ryan did. Jake tore his midway through spring ball. Depends if it's just ACL or Meniscus/MCL/LCL as well. If it's just the ACL it's not that long anymore, if you add any combination of the other things, it's almost a year injury.

It's getting absurd. A lot of these are happening in practice/workouts as opposed to games too.

How did he do it?  How do you tear your ACL if you're just out running stairs.  Conditioning these days is just as dangerous as playing in the games.  Just go out and do some freaking wind sprints and stairs.

This. My brother in law tore his ACL playing air guitar at a party. I don't think this has anything to do with questionable S&C methods...

Thats not true. Ive personally administered MS to an ACL injury from an indoor soccer league. Normally I dont, but I felt for the kid.

one theory has to do with the field turf that michigan (and many other teams) uses.  supposedly, teams that use it and practice on it have a higher # of players with ACL tears.  have no idea if it's true, but it was mentioned last year

I don't think it'll have a huge impact on the offense.  From what I've read, Nuss favors 3 wide sets with a slot guy more often then multiple TE's.  So we may just have to deal with Funchess' shortcoming in blocking, which I'll gladly take if it keeps him on the field.  Unless they're planning on putting him all the way on the outside like a true WR.

uhh, even based on this reasoning, it DEFINITELY changes the offense.  first off, funchess is a WR now, for good.  second, even if nuss doesn't use/like multiple TEs, butt was the starting TE, and our second best receiving option going into 2014.

None because he scared everyone's ACLs into remaining intact.

I know, he has all the intangibles you want in a TE, a few pounds in the offeseason wouldve been great to see. He'll be back, guess he will RS now? Love to see him as a 5th yr senior.

Didn't Georgia have 3 or 4 ACL tears last year alone? I know one of their WRs tore his just by jumping on a teammate after a TD.

I do remember Barwis talking about maintaining the balance between working out quads and hamstrings, and how if you don't have the proper "ratio", you are more susceptible to knee injuries. I had never heard of that before, but it makes sense. Something needs to happen, because the amount of knee injuries is insane lately. I also have noticed that our O lineman don't wear knee braces. That doesn't make sense at all.
