IMO... It just can't be stated enough... - Wednesday, February 05, 2014 11:06 AM
2.5
Losing Hand and McDowell is a massive blow to our defensive line. It also shows that no matter how swell of a guy Hoke is, no matter how much of a "family" atmosphere he brings to the program if you don't win games you can't get the recruits.. And if you can't get the recruits, you can't succeed. Keeping Peppers is huge but it's 1 player on a team full of average players. Just not going to get my hopes up here.. Losing McDowell to MSU could only be the start for MSU's instate recruiting. Big 10 Champs and Rose Bowl Champs. Meanwhile, Michigan pumps up nothing but hot air with a coach that reminds me far more of Tommy Amaker than Bo Schembechler.

I hope to see development this year. I wanna see the team fight hard and win. I wanna see a coaching staff that cares.. That bowl game was a carbon copy of Rich's last game, they quit. Frank Clark said they quit... Sorry for the rant, but I just don't see Hoke being here after next season, just MO...

I'm not going to spend time worrying about what could have been. Everyone who's freaking out needs to relax till season starts. If we look terrible in game, then we have a reason to worry. But we do have young players on defense who are only going to improve from last season.

It seems to me, or I could be wrong, at one time we were in the top 10 recruiting polls. I looked last night, and saw we were 28th. What happened or am I wrong? I know polls don't mean a lot but, jeez a kid looking at it and wondering should I go there?

I asked that same question and the general consensus was it is more a quantity vs quality reason for the drop in the recruiting polls.

Between the 2013 and 2014 classes we've signed a grand total of 2 DEs. Our defensive line this year will go as far as the 2012 class can carry it. A total of 6 linemen were signed in that class, those players are now entering their 3rd year in the program.

As we saw in the Super Bowl…very good things can happen when you can pressure the QB with only your front 4…we haven’t been able to do that in YEARS!

After QB, D-line is the most important position on a team. O-Line is next. The future looks gloomy at this point.

As I said to someone earlier today, we better have one hell of a spring camp. There are 8-10 guys that need to take some MAJOR leaps forward development wise.

Spring camp is less than a month away…so I guess we’ll see. but my guess is we won’t learn much because all of it will be coach speak and paint a nice rosy picture about the development of the players….blah, blah, blah!

So how are teams like Tennessee getting the recruits? They haven't been winning games in a decade plus-- and their coach is likely going to be fired within a season or two.

Try top 5.

De-commits is what happened. Coaching uncertainty is a recruiting killer, it seems.

Michigan only had one decommitment in the 2014 class, and that was over a year ago.

Rankings are based on star power and # of recruits. Our entire class was committed by August, well ahead of other schools. When more kids (and higher ranked kids) started committing to other schools, we got jumped and subsequently fell like a stone in the rankings.

We only had 16 signs while others had 25, 26, etc.  Our "star" average ranks in or near the Top 10 so it was definitely quality over quantity, which has been stated here many times.

Butch Jones? I doubt it, he is a good coach.

He's a good recruiter, he's an average coach that rode the coattails of Brian Kelly. I sadly had to watch him badly underachieve while at Cincinnati. He's not the up to task of dealing with the Saban's, Miles, Sumlin's, or Spurriers of the world from a football standpoint.

Tennessee can't afford to fire him though, they're broke.

You might be right. My memory be might be a little clouded from him having the best season in school history while at CMU. Definitely a coach I will be keeping an eye on to see if he can get it done in the SEC.

I'm in UT country, and many of the fans dislike him already. Or doubt him.

Not a good sign. I honestly don't think he's that bad.

Can't blame him for the current state of affairs at UT

2005 - 5-6 under Fulmer
2006 - 9-4 under Fulmer
2007 - 10-4 under Fulmer
2008 - 5-7 under Fulmer
2009 - 7-6 under Kiffin
2010 - 6-7 under Dooley
2011 - 5-7 under Dooley
2012 - 5-7 under Dooley and Jim Chaney
2013 - 5-7 under Butch Jones

6 of the last 9 seasons there are below .500 under 4 different head coaches (5 if you count Chaney who coached 1 game), that is a systemic problem. I think fans are necessarily mad they have Jones, I think they are mad they missed out on Cutcliffe.
