Magnuson, Bryant, Pipkins and Burzynski OUT for Spring Practice - Monday, February 03, 2014 5:05 PM

http://www.mlive.com/wolv...dtackle_erik_magn.html

Michigan coach Brady Hoke said Monday that rising sophomore guard/tackle Erik Magnuson will miss all of spring practice after having a surgical procedure performed on his shoulder.

"He'll be ready for fall, for sure," Hoke said Monday. "He just won't be ready for spring."

Junior guard Chris Bryant will also miss spring practice with a shoulder injury, as will senior offensive lineman Joey Burzynski (knee) and junior defensive tackle Ondre Pipkins (knee).

Hoke said sophomore wide receiver Amara Darboh (foot) and senior quarterback Devin Gardner (foot) will both be limited when spring practice opens Feb. 25.

The good news is we have bodies on the OL to compete, so lets see what they've got. Magnuson with a shoulder injury is particularly disturbing because he needs to add weight and muscle but if he can't lift, it's going to be hard for him to compete with the other guys and might get passed by on the depth chart.

Mags was suppose to be the odds on favorite for the LT spot, now it's completely up in the air.

I've given up hope on ever seeing Bryant healthy.

He tore his ACL against the Gophers last year so he's still recovering.

offensive line already starting out behind.  Hopefully Nuss is some kind of miracle worker.

ACL injury sometime in mid-season in 2013 (forget which game).  so it's not really shocking that he's still recovering.  also, I agree with bryant.  just a lot of unlucky bounces with him

also, I thought ben braden was the favorite for the LT spot, and mags for RT, along with dave dawson (who's been practicing there, allegedly)

The talk was always Braden at RT and Mags at LT. Mags is a lot more athletic than Braden who is more the road grading type supposedly. Who knows though, Braden was moved from guard before we ever got to see him and there was no chance of him unseating Lewan or Schofield.

I hope that doesn't mean in reality that Magnuson's academic standing had a surgical procedure performed on it.

Heard some good news about Dawson from the fall. Hopefully if nothing else this helps his development at the tackle position for the future!

Dawson is a bit short for tackle and doesn't have particularly long arms that most want. He does have great feet and the demeanor for the position. I had him pegged as an interior guy all the way but I`ll admit, the O-line isn't my strong suit.

So, are we looking at something like this for Spring ball:

LT - Braden, LTT
LG - Bosch, Fox, Bryant
C - Kugler, Glasgow, Miller
RG - Kalis, Bars
RT - Dawson, Samuelson

I`d be shocked if anyone other than Glasgow starts at center. Crazy as it is, he's our most experienced linemen. 4 years in, all I can do is shake my head at the shape of our O-line. We have more questions than answers.

Hell that applies the D-line as well.

Have heard Fox as a tackle all the way. One of Samuelson or Dawson will move back inside when Mags returns. Agree with MF4L on Glasgow.

The sad thing is, the only positions we should have be sorting out this off-season were the two tackle spots. We should be returning 3 very experienced interior linemen who could help with the transition at tackle. Instead, we have no clue what kind of play we're going to get from 4 of the 5 O-line positions.

Very frustrating.

I’m not convinced we will have no idea what kind of play we’ll get from all 5 of them…I know Nuss is a QB coach and OC, but I sure hope he kicks Funk in the ass and explains to our young OL how important it is they are GOOD and not just taking up space. I’m sure Nuss realizes that he won’t be able to run anything he wants to run if the OL isn’t good. and once spring practice starts he’ll quickly realize he’s not working with Bama talent on the OL. My guess is Bama has 3rd string OL that are better than anyone we’ll throw out there at the start of spring ball.

Funk's not up to the task IMO, and I`m not sure if Nuss can do anything about it. Changing blocking schemes up front may help (Nuss is big zone guy) but we`re still only as good as our fundamentals and execution. It's not like Nuss is qualified to head over to the sled and take over drills, he's spent his career coaching QBs and dealing with schemes/gameplans.

Funk is very intelligent and is very knowledgeable, I don't doubt him in that area. The issue has been imparting that knowledge to his guys and getting to play sound. The teaching and developing part has been lacking and I don't know how much an OC can help with that. We have guys who consistently struggle with the basics of line play, who to block, how to play under a base, where to put their hands, how to get out and pull. We've been one of the worst pulling teams in the country over the past 2 years. Our tackles have pulled better than our guards which is completely ass backwards.

Should have thrown money at Bostad when we had the chance.

Hoke said he was frank with the UM assistants about their players' lack of development. The staff will discuss some possible position switches for the spring in the coming days. … He stressed that a primary focus for the spring is improving the secondary and making it more physical, citing the Seattle Seahawks winning the Super Bowl.
