Shane played well, but I didn't see anything out there that would lead me to believe he gives us a better chance at winning next year than Gardner

The defense, on the other hand, is pathetic

Gardner has the mobility so he probably gives us a better chance of winning but Morris throws the ball WAY better than Gardner.  His mechanics are far better and he's accurate.  Gardner is neither and can be a turnover machine.  One thing is for sure, if Gardner gets hurt next year I will have NO worries with Morris playing.

you serious?  you're gonna judge a tr fr's first start against a 4th year junior's body of work and say definitively that he's not better than gardner?  the app st game is on august 30 2014.  you don't think Morris can improve in 9 months?  I for one, want to see an open competition at QB for next year.  after what I saw last night, I believe that morris, after spring/summer/fall practices and workouts, increased knowledge of the playbook (insert joke here), morris MIGHT be a better option.

dead serious.  It takes more than throwing the ball 100 mph........Like TK said, it'll be nice having a quality backup, but I think Gardner gives us the best chance.

And Morris should be the starter after next season.  I think we're in good hands in the future, as soon as we get rid of some terrible coaches.

I definitely think Morris's performance will put the necessary pressure on DG in spring ball for sure. Which is a good thing. Hes gonna be a good one, cant wait to see him mature into a great QB!

BEFORE last night's game I said no way Morris will ever start in front of DG.  Now?  I would have no problem with it whatsoever and would certainly not have any problem yanking Gardner if he's playing poorly in a game.  As far as I'm concerned, whatever gap was there is all but gone.  Morris looked like anything BUT a freshman making his first start.

Gardners ability to improvise and get out and run is what''s going to keep him in the starters roll.  I don't think we'll see any offensive line improvement.  Running game will continue to suck.  We're going to have to rely on our QB to be our lead rusher apparantley, so that means Gardner is our best option.........of course, this is all IMO

Gardner vs Morris is a mere distraction from the real sh!tshow going on.

It's akin to bad loss after bad loss under RR when the D was torched yet again and all the usual questions had been asked during the presser, so the media would start asking about the health of Fitz Toussaint and when he might play because the reaon they were losing had anything to do with the RB position.

Then again, if nothing is going to change w/ the staff, you guys who are willing to follow this program unconditionally will need something to talk about, so carry on.

Morris should start.  Move Devin to WR.  You want a turnover machine?  Or a real QB who can throw the ball with accuracy?

Gardner 208/345, 2,960 YDS, 21 TD / 11 INT  (or 1 pick every 31.3 passes)
Morris 29/47, 261 YDS, 0 TD / 2 INT (or 1 pick every 23.5 passes)

Shane Morris was the ONLY bright spot in one of the most dismal games I've ever seen Michigan play.  Kid's going to be a true star someday.

Agree.  Frankly, it was the only reason I watched the game.  Otherwise I'm not real interested in this team.

Gardner owns the 2 best single-game passing performances by a Mich QB in the school's 134 yr history.

He also just had the 2nd best-single season passing numbers in program history with 3,000 yds (60% completion) and 21TD's (only 4 off Mich's single season record of 25 by both Grbac and Henne). He threw a ton of picks early in the season, but only 1 INT in the last 6 games.

He did all this with absolutely NO offensive line while being sacked 34 times (for reference, Mich only gave up 36 sacks the previous 2 years combined).

And lastly, the kid could have easily packed it in, but he continuously fought, and fought hard, playing injured and showing he's a tough kid that can be a leader on this team moving forward.

He has all the physically tools to be a very good college QB, but can Borges develop him? Can he get some help from his OL? Help from the run game?

Go Blue!!

If you look at the numbers, DG accounted for a higher % of the offense than Denard did. All with the worse performing offensive line and running game in the last 40yrs at Michigan. Kid played injured for half the season, including playing the 2nd half of the Ohio State game with a broken toe.

Michigan fans have always been fickle, but this is cluelessness.

Gardner is Tony Romo Jr. He has all kinds of talent but doesn't have it between the ears. He makes decisions that make Admiral Ozzle's decision to come out of light speed too close to Hoth look good, and look what happened to him.

We are now saying that Gardner's decision making is so bad that it has galactic (albeit a fictional galaxy) repercussions?

looking at the whole season, and not just his 2/3 best games, it was sub-par.  games against indiana and OSU especially inflated his stats.  against NW, he should have thrown about 5 INTs if the wildcats didn't have the worst luck of any team in the country.  against UCONN and UNL, his body language was completely apathetic and disinterested.

with that being said, I'll be the first to say that he didn't have much help in terms of an OL or a run game, and not enough WR weapons (funchess still having drop issues).  yes, he took a pounding, moreso than any other UM QB that I can remember.

the thing is, he physical/natural talents that shane doesn't have, and he has the POTENTIAL to be a top 3 QB in the country.  i really believe that.  but potential is worhtless unless it's actually realized, and if he's making mistakes at such a high rate that it's detrimental to team success, then shane (or bellomy) deserves to get a shot.  whatever happened to the saying "the expectation is for the position, not the player?"

i'll say it again, I'm not calling for morris to be the starter against app state right now, just saying there should be open competition for qb in 2014, as well as for all positions

I've seen people talking about how Shane did great at reading his progressions and making decisions.  All I can say is that in the bowl game, that was the most time a Michigan QB had in the pocket ALL SEASON.  You can't expect Gardner to make progressions when he's running for his life after 2 seconds.

Is that because Morris has better pocket presence and Gardner has happy feet when his first read isn't there so he starts to run around?

I don't know yet as I haven't seen enough of Morris but I know it happens with Gardner.

Jeez, now all of a sudden our O line is the reason for the time in the pocket?  Good God.  Morris didn't have anymore time than Gardner-he just gets rid of the ball the way you're supposed to.  Gardner had a huge confidence problem and was late delivering the ball constantly.  And no, the K State D line doesn't exactly strike fear in anybody but still, Morris did what a QB is supposed to do.

What a comment on the sorry state of the program that a true freshman can start at QB throw 1 pick and NO TDs, setting off a (small) QB controversy.

From Henson vs. Brady for the starting job to both Gardner and Morris just trying not to throw to the wrong team.

from what I watched it was because Borges finally pulled his head out of his arse and started with dink and dunks and the like.  Sure, Gardner held on to the ball to long at times, but if you look at plays he did, most of the time it was because he was waiting for streaks and double moves to get open.

Like I said, it's all my opinion.  I think DG is the man for next season.

Look a rocket arm doesnt equate to good QB play. Morris def has talent but you have to make all throws and he made some good throws yes. But I want to see a fade or a deep ball with air. or a ball to the flat with touch. To me TK it sounds like your enamored with his velocity but there is  more to good QB play than just that. Morris will be good but right now DG is the starter plain and simple. Did he struggle at times yes but we all know the OL contributed to some of that so lets at least give him the benefit of the doubt there.

With that said there should be an open competition in the spring and in fall camp but my money says DG out plays him. But the flip side is if Morris outplays him then UM has a QB for 3 years!!!

It won't matter what Morris does between now and the Appy St. game as Gardner will start no matter what. I know from experience. My sophomore year in college, I was in an *open competition* with the incumbent starter and in fact outplayed him during the spring, summer and fall camp (the coaches told me as much); however, when the first game came around the incumbent started because he had proven it in games. I was just there to help provide some motivation.

Morris v. Gardner is going to play out the same way, except I doubt this is ever labeled as an *open competition."

I saw it and I shouldve clarifed I would like to see it in more than just one game. I dont doubt he can make those throws just want to see it with a bigger sample size.

A strong arm is only part of it.  All these kids can throw a football, that's not the issue but look at Drew Henson.  His single biggest asset was a huge arm and he could throw it places others couldn't so yeah, you bet I'm enamored with that.  And I never said Morris would be the starter next year.  Gardner will start no matter what happens in camp and while there will always be competition, it won't be open that's for sure.  It's Gardner's to lose.  All I've said is I'm a lot more comfortable knowing that if Gardner goes down we have a capable back-up, or so it appears.  It was only one game so let's see how he does on the road after throwing a couple of early picks.  Will he lose his confidence and hesitate like Gardner did or will he have amnesia, which is required to play QB at any level, and keep slingin' it?  Morris came with a ton of hype and we've all seen that before.  My point, my ONLY point is for one game he looked pretty damn good as far as I could see and those that want to grade him out at a C+ were watching a different game.

Pocket presence. DG does not have it. IMO he won't develop it in a year. BTW it's not the end of the world if we use two QB's next year. Maybe that's to progressive. Lol.

Thats fair I am glad you clarified your position. I agree with that Morris looked better than average for sure and has proven that if he has to step in UM wont lose much at the position.

The starting quarterback spot will be up for grabs when spring practice begins Feb. 25, Michigan coach Brady Hoke told multiple media outlets Monday.

The competition seems to mainly be between rising senior Devin Gardner and rising sophomore Shane Morris.
