to be honest no one plays stiffeling def anymore in CFB. Most teams can put up at least 21 on most opponets. I wouldnt say the def has been exposed but it def has issues mostly in the secondary. Plus your opponet determines alot on how you will play. Both PSU and IU can score so to think the def would hold that team to 7 or 10 points is laughable. Look at the SEC they dont stop anyone so its more of the trend in CFB nowadays. MSU has a great def but who have they really played that can score other than IU which they did a great job on BTW. So only time will tell but I dont think UM def is as bad as it used to be for sure. But neither are most teams in CFB today
ND scored 30pts on us. They average 25pts (#83).
Akron scored 24pts on us. They average 19pts (#109).
UConn scored 21pts on us, the most against any opponent this season. They average 18pts (#117).
Minnesota scored 13pts on us. They average 29pts so this was a good defensive game.
Penn St. scored scored 43pts on us, the 2nd most points against any opponent this season (they scored 45 against Eastern Michigan). They average 33pts (#44)
Indiana scored 47pts on us, the 2nd most points against any opponent this season (they scored 73 on Indiana St.). They average 42pts (#11).
We are a punching bag for other teams. I agree that the days of keeping teams to single digits is almost over and what D's are asked to do is get the necessary stops when needed. IMO, that applies to teams that are good and have comparable talent. We still shouldn't need a goalline stand to beat Akron or UConn and give up as many points as we did to P$U and Indiana, teams with inferior talent.

For the most part, M$U's D has held opponents under their averages, but they haven't played anyone with a pulse.
