If Hoke wasn't asleep at the wheel after we drove down late in the 4th, killed a bunch of time, made PSU burn every single TO, with 1:30ish left in the game, he could've simply called a TO, to save a 5 yd penalty, allowing us to still kick the FG to put us back up by 10 points. Leaving PSU down 2 scores AND no TO's left........That endgame would've equated to t Checkmate.
What happened instead?
Hoke isn't paying attention, doesn't call a TO......5 yd delay of game penalty....pushing us to the edge of our kickers range....This I where the 2nd terrible decision was made. Instead of still attempting a super long FG, hit or miss, it puts PSU at the 35-40 yd line. BUT we would've had a shot to seal the game. You hit it, you win, you miss it, were still in the same position we were already at. But no, lets pooch punt it, and get a net gain of 5yds. Great, great decision!
Risk vs reward you ask?
Do you risk a near 50 yd FG to win, or do you call for a punt, in which will gain you an extra 5 whole yards?
Is the attempt at a long FG appropriate in this scenario? If you miss, your opponent ends up at the 35-40 yd line, vs the punt outcome being at the 30....WOW.
Great series of decisions. It seems like once we make one bad mistake, we are unable to pull out of the nose dive......One bad decision after another, this is how planes crash! Its not typically one big thing, its a series of small events leading to its demise.
