Thankfully, the LB position is very talented & full of depth but IMO Ryan is, practically, irreplaceable...hope Gordon is ready for a breakout season & hope that Ross, Bolden & Jenkins-Stone are ready for MAJOR playing time!!

Someone is going to have to slide out. Gordon will be ok, but he is the only other SAM on the roster. Need one of Beyer, RJS, Bolden, or McCray will have to be the second guy at the position. Maybe even Mario.

Unbelievable. First Countess last year, now Ryan. Pissed is an understatement.

Hold on! These injuries take 6-9 months to recover. Hoke said they'll know for sure when he has surgey. I'm praying it's 6 months that gets him back in Sep.

Adrian Peterson came back in 8 months after his ACL surgery, and they are saying he's like some sort of freak of nature.  I wouldn't hold your breath on a 6 month recovery.
 
 
There's also the mental aspect of it.  Look at Derrick Rose, he's been cleared to play for weeks and is scared to get back on the court.

Does anybody know if it is the same knee he hurt his senior year of HS? I know he was a stud as a junior, then his recruiting rankings dropped after he missed most of his senior season with a knee injury. If so, that could take even longer to recover from.

Peterson and Welker were two of the biggest freaks in terms of how fast they were back into "live" action. A lot of guys are up running and cutting again in 4 .months but it's a matter of the mental aspect that takes over. 
 
I had ACL surgery October 25, 2012, and just played basketball for the first time this past Sunday. Running was fine, I was very cautious jumping, and sliding my feet defensively was just not the same. So 5 months later, I am about 75%. Granted, Jake Ryan is a lot better athlete than me and will also have some of the best reconstructing his knee and leading his rehab efforts, but it's still a long process.

I would be as well. One of my friends tore his ACL. He was cleared by the doctors. Like a week later we played backyard football, he received the first kickoff, did a little juke... tore his ACL again. That was brutally sad to watch. This was during high school and it kept him out of his 2 varsity years of football.

8 months til tsiO game at least, right? I will continue to believe he will be there for tsiO game, as it will help keep my sanity about this season......... Any positive reinforcement to the same is appreciated!!

if he came back and played the osu game, wouldn't that risk his med redshirt?  Does it matter when you play the games in regards to applying for it?

He already used his redshirt in 2010. You can only be granted a 6th season of eligibility if your original redshirt was injury-related, which Ryan's was not.

Ryan was not injured in 2010, which is why he's not a candidate to apply for a 6th season of eligibility.  If he were injured in 2010, and that was the reason why he redshirted, then he would be eligible to apply for a 6th year.

A 6th season of eligibility can only be granted if your original redshirt was due to a season ending injury as well. Ryan was not injured in 2010. It was just a regular redshirt. His final year of eligibility will be next season (2014).

Ryan didn't play in 2010. The redshirt was automatic. Every scholarship athlete is given/allowed five years to "use up" their four years of on the field/ice/court playing eligibility. A sixth season is ONLY granted to athletes who have had two full years of eligibility wiped out by injury.

Jake doesn't strike me as the type to keep sitting once he's been cleared by doctors to get back out on the field aka Derrick Rose...
 
That said, I'd be ecstatic if he was back by October.  That would be a 7 month recovery which would be quicker than AP's incredible comeback.  Does anyone know how bad of a tear Jake suffered?

That is what I was wondering too, Matty. Maybe he didnt have a complete tear, maybe a significant partial tear maybe? I mean, you woudnt necessarily need a cadaver ligament or artificial. Maybe a quicker heal up period. I dunno, not an ortho surgeon.
