U-M football winning the in-state recruiting race

Tom Markowski / / The Detroit News

Michigan's fast start in recruiting under football coach Brady Hoke has won the praise of analysts — and has caused concern among followers of rival Michigan State.
Michigan has received 11 commitments, six instate, with the start of the college's one-day camps two weeks away. In the past, players attending these camps, which begin June 1, would often receive their first scholarship offer.

According to Tom Lemming of Prep Football Report, the players Michigan has landed instate has put Michigan State in a hole.

"I've never seen anything like this," Lemming said. "These kids are committing to U-M without seeing other schools. U-M is everywhere.
"Michigan State ran into a Michigan buzz saw. They have to spend more time in Ohio and the Chicago area to get the players they need. They do a great job of developing players, sort of like Wisconsin and Iowa. They can't beat Michigan head-to-head in recruiting. They have to beat them on the field."

What is disheartening to Spartans fans is that of the six Wolverines commitments instate, all had been offered a scholarship by Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio. The one instate commitment for Michigan State, Riley Bullough from Traverse City St. Francis, was not offered a scholarship by Hoke and Michigan.

Going against recent trends, Michigan received commitments from two players (lineman Mario Ojemudia, receiver Devin Funchess) from Farmington Hills Harrison, a school that has sent several players to Michigan State, including receiver Mark Dell and quarterback Drew Stanton.

Harrison coach John Herrington was quick to point out he's had two players (Kevin Bryant and Charles Stewart) go to Michigan in the past.

Herrington said Hoke and his staff are working harder than former coach Rich Rodriguez did to get instate players.

"He's made himself accessible," Herrington said. "Just like Dantonio did when he came in. MSU will get their share. It's great that the two big universities are getting the best players from Michigan."

So far, Michigan clearly has the upper hand for 2012.

Orchard Lake St. Mary's linebacker James Ross and Detroit Cass Tech linebacker Royce Jenkins-Stone are four-star recruits, according to Scout.com and Rivals.com. Both have committed to Michigan.

Of the top-line recruits, Jenkins-Stone was the first to commit (April 16). Funchess was next followed by linebacker Joe Bolden, a four-star recruit from Cincinnati, on April 29. Others, like Ross, quickly followed.

"There is such a thing as momentum in recruiting," said Josh Helmholdt of Rivals. "Getting Ross to commit early was big. It's an exciting time to be around Michigan. These guys are just kicking butt. They're out-working everyone. They're creating excitement and they have openings (for starting positions).
"All this has happened in two months."

Helmholdt said with Michigan State enjoying success recently (Big Ten co-champions), one would think it would have a carry-over affect.
Instate, it hasn't. But there's still time.

With players like Cass Tech defensive back Terry Richardson, Harrison receiver Aaron Burbridge, Southfield tight end Ron Thompson, Flint Powers lineman Dan O'Brien and Battle Creek Harper Creek lineman Kelby Latta uncommitted, Michigan State still can land some of the state's top players.
Lemming and Helmholdt predict Richardson will commit to Michigan, and Lemming said Hoke could also get Burbridge.

Cass Tech coach Thomas Wilcher said it's easy to see why Michigan is doing so well. He said the new staff has re-established itself in high schools.
"Look at who they got," Wilcher said. "They're mostly defensive players. You got the man in there, (defensive coordinator) Greg Mattison. He's the reason why they're doing so well. Kids don't think about things we did. They talk about relationships and going pro. A lot of people want to play for Mattison because of his NFL (Ravens) connection.

"Michigan State has a great reputation. They did offer Jenkins-Stone and Terry. They're not talking to them as much now. U-M got on them and they stayed on them. The reason MSU fell off is because they changed who recruited in Detroit."

Dan Enos was Dantonio's top recruiter in Southeast Michigan before leaving to take over at Central Michigan at the end of the 2009 season.
Wilcher's point is well made, but Helmholdt and Lemming say Michigan's recruiting strength goes deeper than Mattison. Helmholdt credits Fred Jackson, Michigan's main recruiter in the Detroit area. Lemming credits Jackson and recruiting coordinator Jeff Hecklinski.

"Hecklinski has done a great job instate," Lemming said. "Michigan is leading the Midwest. But to have a great year they have to do great out of state."

More praise for Michigan commits and prospects. I love the idea of a bunch of our guys heading down to Columbus decked out in Maize and Blue.

Notes

- While plenty of parents were wearing Ohio State gear on the sidelines of the camp, there wasn't any being worn on the field. Ironically it was archival Michigan's maize and blue that littered the field. Quarterback Shane Morris, linebacker James Ross and cornerback Terry Richardson were among the top performers and represented their future school well on enemy territory. Richardson was the most recent to commit to going to Ann Arbor for college and discussed his verbal pledge last week.

“I committed to Michigan because I felt comfortable with them,” he said. “I did like Alabama and all the other schools but I felt the best at Michigan and that's why I picked them. I have a lot of friends going there and we'll make it happen up there.”

Richardson injured his hamstring at a track meet the night before running the 200 meters but still managed to lock down opposing receivers. He was one of several players whispering in a few recruits' ears about how good it was to be a Michigan man.

- In addition to Knapp taking home offensive line MVP honors, Morris took home quarterback MVP. Kansas City (Mo.)Ondre Pipkins was a terror during one-on-ones and was defensive line MVP while Ray Harris was running backs MVP, Tre Parmalee was wide receiver MVP, Jaylon Smith was linebackers MVP and Sebastian Smith was defensive back MVP.

- Others that impressed along the defensive line were Michigan commit Mario Ojemudia, who should be a very good outside linebacker at the next level, Se'Von Pittman, class of 2013 defensive end Jason Hatcher, tackle Sheldon Day, Pipkins, Alex Pace and Dayrl Goldsmith.

Go Blue!!

Ohio St.'s actions are not unlike their lower intestine: stinky and loaded with danger.

Yes, knock it off Scottsdale.  It's 'Vertically Challenged'.  Please be more sensitive and politically correct next time.

doesn't that beg to question the integrity of the camp?  If the guy needs help stretching and they won't help him because he's a UM committ, that's pretty weak sauce.

Why don't you try laughing from time to time instead of acting like you have a stick up your a*s all the time.

You have great information and we all appreciate it but you come off like a prick. Relax!

Yep, time to chill out.  You don't think the kid has been called this and more in his life?  He seems like the type who could eat it up and go out and prove people wrong.  Of course, that would be assuming a) he actually visits this forum on a regular basis, if ever, and b) even if he did, I highly doubt he'd spend much time worrying about it.  Do you?  I mean, really?
