Why is the roster so young? Thursday, August 14, 2014 5:16 PM (permalink)

Brady Hoke

“I can tell you, the fifth-year guys, we have (four) of them. That class was originally a signing class of 37. That class had 27 make it to campus, and they’re not here (now). Why things like that happen? They happen. We have some guys who have stuck it out. Devin Gardner, Jake Ryan, Will Hagerup and Joey Burzynski. That’s the fifth-year class.”

On the radio this afternoon, Hoke was asked to explain why this roster is still so young and here was his response.

Young yeah....but we aren't like staggeringly young. 56 players on the team are 3rd year players on more....at least according to MGoBlue's official roster

Devin Gardner
Drake Johnson
Justice Hayes
Devin Funchess
Jehu Chesson
Amara Darboh
Norfleet
Burzynski
Braden
Glasgow
Miller
Magnuson
Kalis
Bars

Beyer
Ojemudia
Clark
Strobel
Wormley
Pipkins
Henry
Godin
Bolden
Ross
RJS
Ryan
Morgan
Countess
Raymon Taylor
Terry Richardson
Hollowell
Jarrod Wilson

Wile
Hagerup

All these players have are 3rd year players or higher. I do not want to hear about youth when you can fill your entire 1st team with 3rd year players or higher.

The roster isn't young, it's a built in excuse and to be honest it's insulting. At least GMatt has the balls to say this team is all guys they picked and have hand their hands on the entire time.

Someone point me to the program with 15 fifth year seniors. Don't worry, I'll wait.....

Although I don't blame RD but many of his recruits just didn't pan out...I mean how many of his players never even seen the field let alone never even dressed a game

We won 11 games with a team primarily made up of those recruits. More than can be said for the current crop of kids, many of whom have yet to win a thing. Banging on the last guy going into your 4th year like Hoke did is just silly.

Michigan's 25.9 percent retention rate from its 2010 class -- which should feature either fifth-year seniors in 2014 or four-year seniors a year ago in 2013 -- is by far the worst among any team in the Big Ten, not including new members Rutgers and Maryland.

Here's how those numbers unfold, across the league. Departures can include transfer, dismissal, injury, early NFL draft departure or just general absence.

School              2010 class retention rate           Record ('10-'13)
Northwestern     14 of 17 players (82.3 percent)      28-23
Michigan State   15 of 21 players (71.4 percent)      42-12
Iowa                  13 of 22 players (59.1 percent)      27-24
Purdue              14 of 24 players (58.3 percent)      18-31
Nebraska           12 of 21 players (57.1 percent)      38-12
Illinois               13 of 23 players (56.5 percent)      19-30
Wisconsin          13 of 24 players (54.2 percent)      39-14
Ohio State         10 of 19 players (52.6 percent)      42-10*
Minnesota          10 of 25 players (40 percent)        20-30
Penn State           8 of 20 players (40 percent)        31-19*
Indiana              10 of 25 players (40 percent)        15-33
Michigan              7 of 27 players (25.9 percent)     33-19

(* -- record does not include NCAA sanctions)

The attrition rate under Hoke has been insane, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay worst than the previous coach. We pat ourselves on the back though by saying those guys can't play.

As Maize pointed out, 65% of this roster is made up of upperclassmen. We aren't young.

However, that 65% is wrong. Here's the breakdown of scholarship players:
FR or RS FR- 30
SO-14

RS SO-14
JR or RS JR- 15 (17 if Kerridge and Glasgow are now scholarship)
SR or RS SR- 9 (10 if Joey B is scholarship)

That is 46% are third year or more, 50% if the three names mentioned are now on scholarship. Don't let the numbers get in the way though!

Uh, in Hoke's classes (2012,2013,2014) we've lost one player-- Kaleb Ringer.

Yeah, the youth excuse has to stop.  I'm beginning to tire of Hoke STILL going to the youth card to seemingly make excuses.  He's even going to his youth trump card before this season even starts which is troubling to me.  Especially when you look at the numbers 927 put up there which point to this team actually NOT being all that young...

Is this an excuse for Hoke and company moving forward, a reason as to why the team struggled last season and another in the pocket if it struggles again in 2014? No. At Michigan, fans don't want to hear it. Neither do donors. No one does. Win, or figure out a way to win. Those are the only options.

But this is reality. And it does serve as a harsh reminder of what a program can go through with a change in leadership, and a dose or two of plain bad luck.

This is well said by Nick...

Who gives a rip what percentage of walk-ons are upperclassmen? Let's talk at the big boys table.

We were young. This is the first season Hoke actually has upperclassmen and most if them are juniors. This explains the struggles the last two seasons. This season however is a different story.

Just curious BHF, if Hoke and co manage to have another sub standard year like 7-5 or 8-4. What is your level of support of him after that?

It dips for sure. Michigan should go at worst 9-3 and that's with losing to all three of our rivals. Anything less is inexcusable at this point. But I still say give him one more year, but then he is coaching for his job.
