Among this chaos, Nussmeier is expected to cultivate an offensive identity for Michigan and help the team compete for the Big Ten title next season.
A crucial element of his offensive play-calling while at Alabama was the use of the inside and outside zone-running plays. If he can solidify the offensive line, Michigan has two capable running backs who could thrive in a system similar to what Nussmeier ran in Alabama.

Great article, Phil...there's no doubt the OL is the key to a successful & powerful running game & overall offensive attack in 2014!

Also, thanks for explaining the zone blocking techniques perfectly...must admit to not being tuned into the exact science, until now.

Thanks guys! There a couple of things to keep in mind when looking for zone blocking plays.

1) Zone blocking is done without "pulling" guards or tackles. Personally, as a former HS lineman I *love* to see pulling lineman but they are easy keys to indicate where the plays are going and with increased speed in the next levels of defense (LBs and corners) have taken away the effectiveness of the pulling player.

2) The outside zone is designed to get the entire defense flowing toward the sideline so that the offensive lineman can use the momentum of the defenders against them. The running back can either find a seam created by their lineman taking a defender "out" or cut back against the flow of the play.

The cool thing is that both the inside and outside zone opens up the middle of the field without resorting a standard dive play. The running backs hit the hole with speed and have the potential to do some real damage.

I think Green can become a star in this offense.
