The trials of Austin Hatch Tuesday, May 01, 2012 8:18 AM (permalink)

Ten months ago, Austin Hatch's world was falling apart.
On June 24, a plane piloted by his father, which left Ft. Wayne, Ind., carrying Austin, his stepmother and two family dogs, crashed trying to land at the Charlevoix airport, not far from their Lake Michigan summer home.
Stephen and Kimberly Hatch died. One of the dogs died, one incredibly survived.
Austin, then 16, was in terrible shape, with a severe brain injury, a punctured lung and rib injuries.

I don't know if "find his way" is the right phrase.  It's not like the kid has a troubled past where he needs to get on the right path.  He's survived two freaking plane crashes and lost both biological parents and a step mom.

I hope he has success at UM.  Whether he ever gets on the court or not, I'll be pulling for him in life to overcome the tragedies he has endured.

Seeing him enter a game would rate up there with the Mealer boy walking out and touching the Banner. God has a plan for him, it is more than luck that he survived two plane crashes, somewhere in his life he will accomplish great things.

Update on Austin Hatch: According to a WANE-TV report, he'll spend two more years in high school and then arrive at Michigan in 2014:

Hatch informed WANE-TV that the IHSAA has granted him another year of eligibility per a letter written by Canterbury athletic director Ken Harkenrider to IHSAA commissioner Bobby Cox. . . . In Austin's words, it allows him to count 2011-12 as a "redshirt year." It is an unprecedented ruling in terms of the IHSAA.

Instead of signing with Michigan this November Hatch now has an extra year and will sign with U of M in November of 2013. Hatch says Michigan coach John Beilein and the program has said they will honor his scholarship any year and continue to support Austin.

          Here's the WANE-TV report:

Great news to hear: Michigan recruit Austin Hatch cleared to practice, still unsure if he'll play prep hoops this season

A family spokesman told MLive.com Monday that [Austin] Hatch . . . has received conditional clearance to return to practice with his high school team, Fort Wayne Canterbury. . . .

The family spokesman said Hatch would be participating in "about half" of his teams drills Monday, which is the first day Indiana high school basketball teams are able to practice.

It's still unclear if Hatch will play this season for Canterbury.

"We're taking each day as it comes," the spokesman said. "He's making great progress, but we're not looking any further than today."

Before. He didn't play at all for his high school last season, so the video must be from the 2010-11 season. The second plane crash happened in the summer of 2011.

Here's a WANE-TV video showing Austin Hatch practicing yesterday. Amazing to see him back on the court.

This MLive article from Baumgardner includes an update on Hatch and some notes on the 2013 signees.

Earlier this month, Hatch -- who has since reclassified to the 2014 class -- was given clearance to return to practice with his high school team. He hasn't appeared in a game yet, and he still hasn't been given clearance to practice in full, but according to the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel, folks at Canterbury are still hopeful he'll be able to return this season.

"Hatch has been taking it slow, taking part in some practice drills, but he is not ready to return to the basketball court again," reporter Justin Kenny wrote earlier last week. "It appears to be a day-to-day thing with Hatch, who would just be the icing on the cake on a roster that has a lot of balance."

Hatch made his return on Wednesday night in Loyola's league opener and drilled his first shot in the fourth quarter. The Los Angeles Times reported that Adams and teammates charged onto the court following the shot, which resulted in a technical foul.

"It was the best technical foul I've ever been a part of," Loyola Coach Jamal Adams told the newspaper after the 87-59 victory.

"He hit a three and our bench erupted," Adams said. "It was unbelievable what that kid has gone through and how hard he's worked. That kid has taught me you can come back from anything, that nothing is impossible. It was a spiritual moment."
