Sparty's "Gentleman's agreement" between coaches Wednesday, February 01, 2012 4:31 PM (permalink)

All I can do is shake my head.

When Urban Meyer took over at Ohio State, one of the dominoes was highly touted recruit Se'Veon Pittman changing his commitment from Michigan State to the Buckeyes.

That didn't happen during the Jim Tressel era in Columbus because of a gentleman's agreement between coaches, Spartans defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi said.

"Jim Tressel and Mark Dantonio would never call or talk to each other’s commitments," Narduzzi told the Canton Repository. "People coach Dantonio knows well don’t come in and take players away. When you do, you lose friendships over that."

Narduzzi, who turned down an offer to become Texas A&M's defensive coordinator, was a guest speaker at the Pro Football Hall of Fame Luncheon Club in Canton, Ohio.
Narduzzi said the Spartans' coaching staff learned a lesson.

"It sets a tone and starts a recruiting rivalry," Narduzzi said. "I guess it’s fair game. You don’t want it to be that way, but that’s how it is.

"We don’t worry about a guy we had and didn’t get. We want guys who want to be with us. Our philosophy is to take our time and recruit the right way."

I wouldn't mind those 2 schools getting after each other a bit....take some heat off Hoke and company and while they throw punches at each other, we sit back and beat them to a pulp every year, ha.

Go Blue!!

Ohio St.'s actions are not unlike their lower intestine: stinky and loaded with danger.

There are so many laughable things in this articles I don't even know where to begin.

Hate to say it but no wonder there are only three Big 10 teams who finished in the top 25 in recruiting. "Gentleman's agreement" Are you kidding me? Signing day is in February, not when a kid commits. Sad thing is, this is not the first Big 10 coach to say it, or the only who probably believes in it. The goldfish pond comparison has never fitted more than today. I`m imagining Bret Bielema tearing his office to pieces after losing Kyle Dodson while screaming "WHAT ABOUT THE AGREEMENT!?"

People coach Dantonio knows well don’t come in and take players away. When you do, you lose friendships over that."

I`m sure there will be a lot of sleepless nights over the lost of Dantonio's friendship. Who exactly did Sparty (and apparently others) think they were dealing with? What's the value of a fired "Gentlemen" these days anyway?

"It sets a tone and starts a recruiting rivalry," Narduzzi said. "I guess it’s fair game. You don’t want it to be that way, but that’s how it is.

Probably the most hilarious piece of the article overall. The idea of a recruiting "rivalry" between Sparty and Michigan or Ohio is so unbelievably ridiculous. Such an agreement would only favor Michigan State. Michigan State offers little to no threat of stealing commits away from Ohio or Michigan. A "Gentlemen's agreement" would only favor a school unable to hold onto it's stash of nuts. Bears don't make agreements with squirrels to not eat them, or their hideaway stash of nuts. What does the squirrel have to offer?

Narduzzi is d**m right that he "doesn't want it to be that way." He and the Spartans are at a tremendous disadvantage from a recruiting standpoint.

Whatever, but in the future watch and see Urban Myer take a number of kids who previously had verballed to Michigan.  The guy is unrelenting.

This from the same guy who acted like a buffoon at a recent coaching clinic.

"They've got a new coach, and it's different," Dantonio said. "I would say it's pretty unethical, in the end."

-- Meyer's recruiting methods under fire
Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema made waves Wednesday when he suggested new Ohio State coach Urban Meyer used "illegal" recruiting practices in signing his first class.
Now it appears that Bielema and Wisconsin are taking things to the next level.
Sporting News reported Thursday that Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez will speak Friday with Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany about Meyer's recruiting methods during the league's athletic director meetings.

He's certainly not making many friends amoung coaches in te big 10....ha. we naturally hate Ohio so that's a given, then he slaps Dantonio in the face and now him and Bielema are at odds. It's deja vu with our previous coaching staff....only this time it's not us, it's O$U.

First time he calls timeout to tact on another score (true story) he`ll lose even more friends.

Don't really think he cares, all about winning.

The Cryer could care less about the integrity of the Big 10 or making friends with the other sideline....he will do absolutely everything in his power to win and because that means illegal activities then so be it, he'll be the 1st to particpate.

Just because I live in Columbus, Ohio I am not a fool...

Sparty is worried about getting the left overs again.  The only reason they could recruit before was because of this agreement between the vest and Groucho Mark.  Now that this is gone he realizes how insignificant MSU is and that pisses him off.  GoBlue!

Apparently Coach Hoke sees nothing wrong with Cryer's recruiting tactics:

As for Meyer, the OSU coach is not, as expected, very pleased with the accusations.  In fact, he vowed that the criticism will merely make him and his staff work that much harder on the recruiting front.

You’re pissed because we went after a committed guy?” Meyer asked rhetorically at the same Ohio high school coaches clinic Friday. “Guess what, we got nine guys [his coaching staff] who better go do it again. Do it a little harder next time.”

Meyer is going to be good for the Big 10 IMO. I wish that Dan Mullen had gotten the Penn State job and added pressure to excel from there as well.

Sink or swim time.

"We had an opportunity to discuss a number of issues with each other and conference staff, including those that have arisen this week," Meyer said of the meeting in his statement. "It should be noted that my coaching staff is in full compliance with our recruiting efforts, and no one on this staff did anything illegal or unethical. We will continue to comply with NCAA rules and recruit with relentless effort, especially the great state of Ohio.
