A coach secure in his position probably would rest Gardner and use the game to groom Morris to be a viable backup next season.

Hoke says that team is playing this game “…for his seniors,” but after two consecutive disappointing seasons and increased criticism of his coaching staff, there’s a lot riding on this game.

And whoever starts at quarterback will tell us how much.

Absolutely he should start, DG gives us the best chance to win.  I personally do not believe if Hoke chooses one or the other to start its an indication of his status with the school. I believe its a matter of who is the most prepared to play and who gives us the best chance to win the game.  If Hoke starts SM over DG, if I were DG I would pop smoke and either go Pro or find another school where he can play immediately (see Russell Wilson).

Oh and what is this phantom injury that may grant Shane a medical redshirt?  First I have heard of it.

Unless his leg/foot is broken he'll be out there. Which could hurt the team without full practice time.

Exactly. If Gardner is healthy he starts. End of story. Shane only plays if Gardner can't go.

do you ever really heal from turf toe?  Isn't this going to be something he just has to deal with forever?

Turf toe lasts forever. It flares up, and it's gonna be there for a while.
