Shannon Smith 2013 signee Wednesday, June 06, 2012 7:20 PM (permalink)

The word on twitter is that Shannon Smith, a 5-foot-7 point guard, is transferring from UNC to Michigan. After sitting out 2012-13, she'll have two years of eligibility remaining. Not sure how this is possible given the 2012-13 scholarship situation, but perhaps someone on the current roster won't be returning in the fall. Here's her UNC profile:

FRESHMAN SEASON 2010-11
Dynamic scorer who will look to break out after an abbreviated true freshman campaign • Appeared in eight games before taking a medical redshirt due to lingering illness • Averaged 2.5 points per game and shot 50 percent from the field (7 of 14) and 67 percent from three (4 of 6) • Scored nine points on 3-of-3 shooting from beyond the arc in her debut against North Florida • Played a season-high 18 minutes, scored nine points and dished out four assists against Coastal Carolina on Nov. 19 • Had two points and a season-high three steals against Western Carolina on Nov. 21 • Appeared in all three games of the Rainbow Wahine Showdown as well as against East Tennessee State on Dec. 8 before being shut down for the season.

PREP/PERSONAL
Coached by Ken Beaty • Sporting News All-America honorable mention • McDonald's All-American nominee • Miss Basketball in the state of North Carolina for 2010 • Two-time 3A State Championship Most Outstanding Player, including in 2010 when she won the Kay Yow State Championship MVP award after leading her Forestview squad to the state title • Two-time AP All-State, including co-Player of the Year in 2010 • North Carolina East-West All-Star Game MVP • Led her team to four consecutive Big South Conference regular season and tournament titles • A four-year starter who finished with a career record of 111-11 • Four-time state and regional AAU champion • Finished her career as the all-time leading scorer in Forestview and Gaston County history with 2,329 points • Ranked in the All-Star Girls Report Top 100 and is considered the No. 26 point guard in America by ESPN HoopGurlz • Daughter of Kevin and Ramada Smith • Father Kevin was a two-time All-Big Ten selection and captain at Michigan State, playing from 1979-82.

UNC's 2011-12 stats show that Smith played in 25 games (starting none), averaging 13 minutes/game and 3 points/game. She shot 35% overall (23 for 65) and 27% from 3-point range (8 of 30). She had 43 assists on the year and 53 turnovers.

Here's confirmation of Smith's transfer to Michigan from the player herself:

Her dad will need to get one of those "House Divided" t-shirts. ;-)

Her transfer may be a result of this:
      http://espn.go.com/high-s...ington-commit-together

Per the comments on ESPN and Rebkell, Hatchell doesn't have the roster spots for everyone who's verballed to her monster 2013 class.

From what people have posted on one of the UNC boards, it sounds like Smith wasn't happy with the Tar Heels coaches during last season (I assume because of her lack of playing time), so she may have been planning to transfer even before the recent UNC commitapalooza. Also worth noting is that Kevin Smith, her father, was an all-stater at Birmingham Brother Rice before going to U-D and then transferring to MSU, so Shannon Smith likely has some family in the area. I'm pretty sure she was born in Michigan, although I haven't been able to verify that.

I'm trying to remember the last time we had a transfer into the program. It's highly unusual. Off the top of my head, I think Molly Murray may have been the only one since I've been watching the program.

I talked to one of the former coaches about transfers and JUCOs once and was told that it was kind of frowned upon in the athletic department. Things may have changed over the years. I can think of a couple in SB and some in MBB since then.

I think you're forgetting Kendra Seto--transfer from Vermont.

I saw Kevin Smith sink a midcourt shot at the buzzer in the state championship game to send the game into overtime against Earvin Johnson's Lansing Everett team back in 1976.  Brother Rice lost in OT, I wonder whatever happened to Earvin.

I found the video below of the championship game Frank mentioned. Kevin Smith's half-court shot can be seen around the 3:00 mark.

Frank, were the state finals held at Crisler every year back then or did they alternate with Jenison? After the Crisler renovation is complete, is there a chance of bringing them back to Crisler or is there some sort of long-term deal in place for Breslin?

I don't know the exact time lines but they were always held in old Jenison Field House every year.  Sometime in the 70's they were moved Crisler, sometime in the 80's they were moved to the Palace, then finally in the 90's they were moved to Breslin and have been there ever since. Not sure of the plans for future state tournaments.
I see I was off by one year, the game referenced above was in 1977 not 1976.

I was looking to see what's up with Adut Bulgak, a former Carolina recruit, and found that she signed with Trinity Valley Community College. Weird thing is I also saw Shannon Smith as a signee as well. It's the same Shannon Smith who's transferring here. What's up with that? Could she play at a juco for 2012-13 and still have 2 years remaining when she comes here? Here's the link: http://www.njcaa.org/coll...11&category=Intent

That's weird (and a nice find). On Twitter, Smith replied to someone on June 29 (a day after she supposedly signed an LOI with Trinity Valley) saying she was transferring to Michigan. She also said that she'll be in Texas for the rest of the summer. Maybe she's just taking some classes there in order to be able to enroll at Michigan in the fall? (She's not in the U-M directory.)

This whole transfer has been odd given the lack of an official announcement and the apparent lack of a 2012-13 scholarship for her.

Someone pointed out on a UNC message board that Smith had indeed cryptically tweeted around June 28 about attending--and playing basketball--at TVCC during 2012-13. She'll still have two years of eligibility remaining when she arrives in Ann Arbor for 2013-14.

I had never heard of this before, but I found in the NCAA Division 1 Manual a section (14.5.6) on "4-2-4" transfers--athletes who transfer from a four-year college to a two-year college and then to another four-year college. There are a number of requirements that need to be met for a 4-2-4 athlete to be immediately eligible at the second four-year institution. But that does seem to be the route Smith is taking. The posters on the UNC board speculated that she was doing this so she wouldn't have to sit out a year. But of course another reason might be that Michigan couldn't offer her a 2012-13 scholarship.

From the early signing period press release:

Shannon Smith (Gastonia, N.C./Forestview [Trinity Valley CC]), a 5-7 guard, was the Associated Press women's prep co-player of the year in North Carolina in 2009-10 after averaging 23 points and seven assists to lead Forestview to the 3-A state title. She was named North Carolina's Miss Basketball in 2010, finishing her high school career as the leading scorer in Forestview and Gaston County history with 2,329 points. She started her collegiate career at North Carolina, taking a medical redshirt in 2010-11 after playing in only eight games while battling an illness. During her redshirt freshman campaign (2011-12), Smith played in 25 games, averaging 3.0 points and 1.4 rebounds in 13.0 minutes per game. Smith is currently at Trinity Valley Community College and will have two years of eligibility remaining at Michigan.

"Shannon is going to bring, more so than the other freshmen, experience at the highest level," Barnes Arico said. "She comes from a great high school program and AAU team and, of course, was at North Carolina for two years. She was a big-time recruit. I think that with the loss of this senior class after this year, she can come in and bring some experience to our backcourt. She is a tremendous playmaker who has the ability to score, has speed and athleticism. Her dad played basketball at Michigan State and her family is from Detroit, so she is coming home. I think one of the most important things about her is that she is a winner. When you ask her what her goals are, she wants to win a championship. She is coming to Michigan to help us achieve that."

Shannon Smith was among six Trinity Valley players suspended from a recent game, which TVCC had to forfeit because they had only four players available.

Trinity Valley Community College announced Friday that it will forfeit its women’s basketball game Saturday against Weatherford College.

The Lady Cardinals, undefeated in 11 games and ranked No. 2 among the nation’s junior college women’s teams, had just four healthy eligible players becaue of a brouhaha last weekend against Northeastern Oklahoma A&M that resulted in the suspension of six TVCC players.

Saturday’s forfeit will end the Lady Cardinals’ 47-game winning streak and drop their record to 11-1.

The suspensions are the result of an on-court altercation late in a game last Friday during the TVCC Classic in Athens. All but one were suspended for leaving the bench to run onto the floor. Trinity Valley finished the game with four players in the 83-61 victory.

Although a team can finish a game with four players, NJCAA rules require a team to begin a game with at least five players.

In their first game following the forfeit, TVCC won their conference opener, with Smith scoring 13 points.
