http://espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/7173441/detroit-red-wings-sign-niklas-kronwall-7-year-contract The Detroit Red Wings signed defenseman Nicklas Kronwall to a seven-year contract extension Monday. He would have been an unrestricted free agent July 1. The total value of Kronwall's contract is $33.25 million. The deal carries an annual salary-cap hit of $4.75 million per season. Kronwall's annual salaries will be $3.25 million, plus a $1.25M signing bonus; $6 million for seasons two through four, then $5.5 million, $3.5 million and $1.75 million, a source told ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun. The contact contains a full no-trade clause for the first five years. Kronwall was named an assistant captain this season and will be counted on for even more leadership when 41-year-old defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom retires. Kronwall has a goal and an assist in nine games this season. He has 35 goals, including a career-high 11 last season, and 183 points over 394 games. Kronwall is in what's known as the Triple Gold Club with an Olympic gold medal, world championship and Stanley Cup title. Good move? Bad move? What do you think.... Go Wings!!

We need to sign him cause he will take over for Lidstrom. However the length of the contract concerns me due to the fact that has had some injuries during his career.

Contract length = not so great, cap hit = real nice considering the stupid money being thrown around at guys that hit the market. I've always thought the Wings have tried to throw the mantel of "Next Lidstrom" on Kronwall when, unfortunately, it's not even close. Kronner is very good at what he does but he'll never be #5. I'd love to see him pick up his offensive numbers while maintaining the edge/hitting ability he has.

Nyquist called up after they put Brunnstrom on waivers. Kids was electric in the preseason and gets some time with the big club tonight. Hopefully he brings a spark and the rest of the guys can feed off his energy. GO WINGS!!

Lidstrom is one of the top 5 defensemen in NHL history, calling anyone in the league (let alone on the Wings) the next Lidstrom is borderline ridiculous.

madlucky1 UH, TOP 2 OF ALL TIME. Personally he is in my top 3 all time with Orr and Harvey...I don't care how you order them.

Great no call on the head shot to Kronner in OT that immediately led to the GW goal. Nice one refs. They're not the only ones to blame. Can't give the other team 8 PPs and expect to kill them all.

For points you have to hand it to Bobby Orr. He only played in 650+ games and had 900+ points. But yeah, I'd go with Orr, Lidstrom, Bourque and Harvey. I think Nick is a better defensive player than Orr or Bourque. It's hard to compare era's.

These guys are digging themselves into a hole early in the season. Not good. What was the quote last year from Kenny? Most of the teams in playoff position by Thanksgiving usually stay there with slight jockeying by other teams? I don't know if it's growing pains with the new staff, guys not stepping up, etc but they aren't getting many breaks, let alone creating many.

Wings hold on tonight against the Ducks! Good win, and much needed. They are extremely hard to judge this year so far. Obviously during that 5 game skid they couldn't score, but when they are scoring, the are putting up 4-5 a game!! Love it, and I'm going down to the Joe this Wednesday to watch them take on the Flames. First game in 2 years, when I went to the firts round game against Phoenix.

Decent road trip. Would've liked to see them beat St. Louis, but oh well.

Yep, 2 in a row over teams we have not played well against in their bldgs. Put a clinic on against the Kings and got off strong against the Quacks and held on (looked like we were running out of gas.) Hopefully this is the start and we can reel off a nice run of 12 out of 15 or something like that.
