Realistic Expectations for the Wolverines' 2014 Season Monday, May 12, 2014 6:25 PM (permalink)

Michigan slid to 7-6 last season after an abysmal 1-4 month of November that began with a crushing defeat on the road to Michigan State and ended with a loss at home to Ohio State. Michigan sat idle while its two main rivals met to decide the Big Ten Championship—clearly not what Brady Hoke had in mind when he returned to Ann Arbor to replace Rich Rodriguez.

Good article, Phil...it all comes down to the OL, for me.

If they struggle like last year, I see 8-4, at best. However, if they come together somehow, I can see a 10-2 or 11-1 season!

It's all on the OL guys, whether right or wrong.

^^^ This.  All on the O line.  If they are at least functional at holding the line, there isn't a team on our schedule that we CAN'T beat.  If they're in 2013 form, yes, I could see us dropping 3 or 4 easily, but I'm expecting vast improvement due to both experience, and the arrival of Nuss as OC.

There are 5 sure wins on the schedule in 2014:
AppySt - lighting ain't striking twice
Miami - even RR could beat Miami
Rutgers - given the current staff track's record on the road, this one should probably be a toss-up, but I'm confident Blue cruise
Indiana - worse beating than last year
Maryland - the 2 new teams should be penciled in as Ws every time they're on the schedule

Then there are 5 games that could go either way (in order of certainty)
Northwestern - road game again, almost lost last season with terrible offensive showing in regulation
Utah - only won 5 games last year, but have won in the Big House before and beat Stanford last year.
Minnesota - game was a lot closer than the score last season as Michigan got all the breaks.  Won 4 straight after last year's loss.
PennSt - should've won last year in Happy Valley, but managed to repeatedly snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.  After owning them during LC's tenure, UM's lost 4 straight in the series.
Notre Dame - rivalry game on the road is kryptonite to Hoke.  Would be nice to get the win, but doubt it.

Two games that this team needs to win, but probably won't.
Sparty - will need to score a couple TDs to win this game, and haven't done that since 2011.  Haven't won in EL since 2007.
tOSU - probably a better chance of beating them than Sparty, but still doubtful.  A lot can happen over the course of a season, so we'll see.

  5 Sure wins
+3 toss-up wins (probably NW, Minny, and Utah)
=8 total

Bowl game is unknown, but this team has not been good in bowl games under Hoke, so it's probably a stretch to assume a win.

7 wins = another disappointment
8 wins = pretty much winning every game they should without beating anyone they shouldn't
9 wins = team is improving and beat absolutely every team they should
10 wins = either beat ND (yay) or won the bowl game
11+ wins = a relative success--with a bowl win--even though they lost to Sparty and tOSU AGAIN.

P.S. It's May fer chrissakes, so who knows, but it was fun coming up with that list.

I'd say that's pretty much it.  Although I don't think I'd call 11+ wins a relative success.  I was searching for a word more along the lines of MIRACLE. ;)  I'd say ND, Sparty, and OSU are guaranteed losses (or as close as you can get.)  Then I figure we'll sh** the bed on the road once or twice so there's 4-5 losses.  So, for the 7th straight year I'll say 8 wins tops.

Looking at their schedule, they shouldn’t lose a home game…

Appy St
Miami
Utah
Minnesota
P$U
Indiana
Maryland

That’s 7 wins…

Getting 1 or 2 on the road against Rutgers/NW should get us to 8/9 wins…

Sneak up on either ND/Sparty/O$U and that could give us 9/10 wins…

Close bowl game so that could go either way….

8/9 wins after the bowl season is still an improvement, but basically the worst Hoke could do and still keep his job.

9/10+ wins in any capacity in any order against any of the teams….after the bowl season and that will be a major jump up and improvement showing me this team and new(er) staff that Hoke put together in the off-season was the right move and will feel more confident going into the 2015 season. Also, that will dramatically help with recruiting the tail end of 2015 and jump start 2016.

Go Blue!!

I'm still trying to figure out how the re-alignment ended with us having to go TO East Lansing two years in a row as well as back to NW again...

Sitting here in May, I would like to see our defense WIN us some football games this season.  We have the defensive coordinator and the talent, it's time for them to shoulder the load while the offense finds its feet.  If that comes to fruition, all bets are off because the pressure will be off the offense while the OL gels, and let's not forget that unit still features several playmakers and a senior QB.

So that said, I am slightly more optimistic about our prospects on the road compared to our recent struggles because I think our D is going to take a big step forward this season.  The ND game will set the tone until we get to Michigan State; I say it every year with ND, but TAKE CARE OF THE FOOTBALL and I like our chances there.

The game in East Lansing should serve as a bellwether for this offensive line and the team as a whole.  There's no question that Dantonio and Narduzzi have had our number over the past 6 years.  I hate to say it, but this is one of those games where even a loss could end up being a positive sign if we are able to move the football and put points on the board only to end up losing in a close game on the road (don't get me wrong it'd still burn badly) as opposed to rushing for -48 yards...

I'm right there with Scottsdale in that a 9-10 win season would be a resounding success and big time step in the right direction heading into a loaded home slate in '15, even if that includes losses to our rivals.  Perhaps even more importantly, I'd really love to see us playing our best football at the end of the season and finish off November strong.
What the mind can conceive, the mind can achieve; and those who stay will be Champions.

Eleven wins is definitely a great season in and of itself, but losing to the two biggest conference rivals again would temper the enjoyment a little.

After the last 2 seasons, though, 10 wins should placate the masses. This program's 7-8 in its last 15 games, so .500 would be an improvement.
