Thoughts?

Michigan coach Brady Hoke announced a defensive staff shuffle on Thursday, featuring new position coaching jobs for each of his four current defensive assistants.

Under the new alignment, defensive coordinator Greg Mattison will coach all linebackers, Curt Mallory -- formerly the defensive backs coach -- will coach the safeties, Roy Manning -- formerly the outside linebackers coach -- will coach the cornerbacks and Mark Smith -- formerly the inside linebackers coach -- will coach the defensive line.

If it works, that's fine...but I wonder what exactly makes Smith a better DL coach than GM & Manning, a LB as a player, a better CB coach

There's simply no way of knowing if/how this will work until actual game play in the fall IMO.

How can you go from coaching outside linebackers to corner backs?  Seems like completely different positions to me.

To me this is trying to put a band-aid over a 12 inch gash. Hoke is essentially admitting we have coaching issues, he just doesn't want to fire anyone. Instead of making actual changes and bringing in proven position coaches with track records of success we are just shifting guys around and hoping for the best.

Kids love Manning on the recruiting trail but he has zero experience coaching the secondary and only one year of experience coaching on the defensive side of the ball. For a unit with horrid fundamentals and technique that is not the type of move that leaves me brimming with confidence. Yes, Mark Smith has experience coaching the D-line but he hasn't coached linemen in 15yrs and the ones he did coach were at the D1-A level. He's never produced an All-American linemen much less a high draft pick. He's never dealt with elite line prospects or had his unit go against elite O-lines. My position on Mallory is well known, he has no business coaching at Michigan. It' say two way tie between he and Funk for worst coached position group. The only area we upgraded was at LBer where GMatt takes over.

It's mindless. Instead of this shell game why not go out and actual hire quality assistant coaches? Why not hire guys who have proven that they can get the job done? Instead of going after say Larry Johnson, who has numerous All-Americans and first round defensive linemen on his resume, we move a career small school coach and now have to hope and pray he can get results. Johnson of course was scooped up by Urban Meyer so we'll have to deal with that for the forceable future. We ran off Jerry Montgomery, who is coaching to rave reviews out in Oklahoma, only to hand the entire line to a MAC level coach.

You won't hear me say one word about these coaches and the job their doing once the season begins. This is all on Hoke who had the opportunity to make real changes and actually improve the staff and program but decided to let personal relationships and loyalty get in the way.

Hoke made his bed, time to lie in it.

Brade: Curt, maybe you oughtta just focus on the Safeties.

Mallory: Coach, I don't know much about Safeties.

Brade: They are defensive backs, but there's just a little more asked of 'em than Cornerbacks.

Mallory:  I don't like the sound of all that responsibility, Coach.

Brade:  Well...I know ya don't, Curt, but there are only a few of them on the roster and they aren't very good anyway, so Uncle Dave and I think this is the area where we can best harness (read: hide) your coaching talents.

Mallory: You sure, coach?

Brade: I sure hope so.

Uncle Dave......lol

Why can't we move funk to d line coach, gmatt to o line coach, Mallory as wr coach, and hellky to Cbs.

Oh yeah please don't try and cover a 12" gash with a band aid, seek emergent help, leave the bandaids to the professionals, like Hoke.

Ah yes, the foul smell of desperation found mostly in coaches who are potentially entering their last season.

With the defensive changes, Hoke had his brother, a defensive secondary coach in the NFL, come in and help Roy Manning learnabout coaching cornerbacks. Manning has never done it.

Here's an idea, HIRE YOU'RE F**KING BROTHER WHO COACHES CORNERBACKS!!! Or someone like him who, oh I don't know, COACHES CORNERBACKS!!!!

If I didn't know any better I'd say Hoke is trying to get fired, he's just setting Manning up.

Hoke may be a bigger joke than Rodriguez.  Maybe not yet but he's definitely closing fast.  This program is such a laughingstock right now it's hard to even follow along.

I would agree if the records were even close, but they're not. We're still a laughing stock, but we're not irrelevant. During RR years we were irrelevant, both on the field and on the trail.

Every time I see Brady Hoke standing on the sidelines head-set-less & clapping no matter what just happened or I read about Brady making a move like this I'm always reminded of the story about the post turtle...An old rancher is talking about politics with a young man from the city. He compares a politician to a "post turtle". The young man doesn't understand and asks him what a post turtle is.
The old man says, "When you're driving down a country road and you see a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a post turtle. You know he didn't get up there by himself. He doesn't belong there; he can't get anything done while he's up there; and you just want to help the poor, dumb thing down. And all you can think is I wonder what sort of moron put the poor thing so far above its station in life."...It's time to take Brady off his post & send him & the moron who put him there packing. Good lord this is getting absurd.
