ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan football rising sophomore tight end Jake Butt (Columbus, Ohio/Pickerington North) is out indefinitely with a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered in winter conditioning, the team announced today (Thursday, February 13).

Butt finished his freshman campaign with 20 catches for 235 yards and two touchdowns, third on the Wolverines in each category.  Butt had a season-best five catches for 85 yards and a touchdown against Ohio State.

"Jake's done a tremendous job since he's been here," said Michigan football head coach Brady Hoke. "He's worked extremely hard and gained a lot of weight to become the complete tight end he wants to be. I think he showed flashes of that towards the end of last season. This is a tough break, but because of his work ethic and attitude, the kind of young man he is, we know he will be back as soon as he can and as strong as ever."

So what is the typical rehab for this type of injury?

Should be back before conference play if he heals like Jake Ryan did. Jake tore his midway through spring ball. Depends if it's just ACL or Meniscus/MCL/LCL as well. If it's just the ACL it's not that long anymore, if you add any combination of the other things, it's almost a year injury.

It's getting absurd. A lot of these are happening in practice/workouts as opposed to games too.

There is something wrong with our strength and conditioning coach's methods IMO.

How did he do it?  How do you tear your ACL if you're just out running stairs.  Conditioning these days is just as dangerous as playing in the games.  Just go out and do some freaking wind sprints and stairs.

Best wishes to the kid! Im sure he's hating life right about now. Just rest and relax and try not to get addicted to the morphine.

This. My brother in law tore his ACL playing air guitar at a party. I don't think this has anything to do with questionable S&C methods...

They don't give you morphine for ACLs anymore, jsj.

Thats not true. Ive personally administered MS to an ACL injury from an indoor soccer league. Normally I dont, but I felt for the kid.

Riiiight.  ACL tears are becoming more and more common these days, and it's not just a Michigan problem.

8 in 2 years?

Sorry- that doesn't happen regularly.

Time to change something in conditioning.
