just because he's opening his recruitment, where does UM stand?   was he on our radar before?  Were we on HIS radar before?

Yes and yes. Even though Kalis has been an OSU commit, our coaches continued to recruit him. Tressel's "resignation" opened the door for us.

He's good friends with Tom Strobel

Just an FYI..........Ohio State's camp is this weekend, and it was largely assumed that Kalis would be there.

If he comes to visit UM instead of attending OSU's camp...........wow.

I read somewhere that he had called Fickell to tell him he was de-committing but, after a 45 minute conversation with him, decided not to - at that time.

According to TomVH (MGoBlog) and Josh Helmholdt (TheWolverine), he will be up this weekend with his dad. TomVH has an article up and Josh has an ITF up.

I read somewhere that he had called Fickell to tell him he was de-committing but, after a 45 minute conversation with him, decided not to - at that time.

                http://www.cleveland.com/osu/index.ssf/2011/05/ohio_state_buckeyes_st_edwards.html

LAKEWOOD, Ohio - St. Edward junior offensive lineman Kyle Kalis was sweating and his heart was racing at 3 p.m. Tuesday afternoon as he dialed his cell phone to tell Ohio State interim football coach Luke Fickell goodbye.

"This phone call is for my de-commitment," he told Fickell.

By the end of the 45-minute phone call, Kalis was back in the Buckeye fold, a member of the 2012 recruiting class, for now.

Kalis said he is so impressed with Fickell that he will play for Ohio State as long as it makes Fickell the permanent coach. If it hires someone else, Kalis said he will look elsewhere.

"The only way I'd go to Ohio State is if Coach Fick is the coach," said Kalis, a Westlake resident. "I know him pretty well. He knows the way I'm a fighter and I don't give up on things. He said he went through the same thing in college and ended up going to Ohio State, and he said if I go to Ohio State, it will be the best decision of my life.

"He knew what I knew, that I wanted to be a Buckeye."

Kalis (6-5, 305), regarded as one of the top junior linemen in the country, also wanted to play for Jim Tressel, who resigned Monday. That's why Kalis' first reaction was to pull back his oral, non-binding commitment with Ohio State, which he announced last September.

"I see myself as a very loyal guy. The person I committed to was coach Tressel, and with coach Tressel gone, I felt like I had no other option than to de-commit," Kalis said.

The news of Tressel's departure hit Kalis hard Monday morning.

"My first thought was shock. My heart sank and my stomach started hurting," he said. "I turned my phone off and went back to bed. I had 87 missed calls from all over, the New York Times, ESPN. I didn't return one of them. I thought it would be disrespectful, like I was talking behind coach Tressel's back.

"I'm not sure how this happened, but it happened."

Kalis did make one call Monday. He called Tressel.

"We talked for about 15 minutes," Kalis said. "His spirits were pretty high. He didn't want me to worry about him. He said, 'Now that I'm gone, I'm just one of those old guys.' He said that he only lives 12 miles away and I should stop and see him any time."

Also Tuesday, OSU incoming freshman signee Chris Carter, a senior lineman at John F. Kennedy, and his family declined to comment on his future. But JFK coach Scott Wodtly talked to Carter minutes after the news broke of Tressel's resignation.

"Chris and I were kind of taken aback because we love coach Tressel, not just as a coach but also a person," said Wodtly, "but Chris told me he's committed to Ohio State and plans on playing there."

This was May 31 and doesn't sound like he has any plans of going someplace else.

TOM: Is there any chance that you head up to Michigan this week for their camp?
KYLE: Yeah me and my dad are going up there this weekend to meet everyone for a visit. We're driving up Friday night then staying all day Saturday.

TOM: What prompted this visit? I know that you've been saying you are interested in Michigan, but why visit now?
KYLE: It's pretty much for the past few months I've become really good friends with Tom Strobel and he said I would love it up there, he fell in love with it. Tom was up there last weekend and he was talking about me with the coaches, they were joking around saying we could be roommates. I think Chris [Wormley] will be up there too [TomVH ed: I confirmed with Wormley that he is visiting this weekend]. I'm closer with Tom, but I am friends with Chris.

TOM: Is that important for you to have people that you already know there, too?
KYLE: Yeah, a big part of me liking Michigan is being able to come in with guys like Tom, maybe Chris [Wormley], being able to know that I'll practice with guys that are going to make me better.

TOM: I'm assuming your dad is an Ohio State fan too, what has he said about all this?
KYLE: He's actually not an Ohio State fan, he's indifferent. With him he's already been through this so he tells me to go with my heart. He's told me to get up there and talk with Coach Hoke, get up there and meet them in person.

TOM: What are you looking to get out of this visit
KYLE: The main thing is just getting a chance to sit down with Coach Hoke and a big thing is also to meet with the strength coach. I want to sit down with him and see his tactics. I also want to sit down with Coach Funk and maybe meet a few of the players.

TOM: Is this your first time up there?
KYLE: Yes, this will be the first time. Tom [Strobel] said when you get up there it's just a different place.

TOM: What's next after this? Are you taking any more visits?
KYLE: This summer I might get out to Auburn, Alabama, Iowa, or Miami. I probably won't get out to all of them, I want to enjoy my summer so we'll see.

                  Interesting....

Thanks for the pickup Scottsdale... Seems like he's looking for the chance to abandon ship.

You never know what an 18 year old kid is going to do and what goes into the decisions they decide to make.

Kalis says he wants to be a Buckeye and he's a loyal guy, but it sounds like he is looking for a reason to not go there.

I don't know what, if anything will come of this but anytime you can get a kid on campus that is a good thing.

I firmly believe that Kalis wants to be a Buckeye, whether he ends up one is another story. All these guys who made early decisions have to take stock of what they want now. Even if he ultimately ends up at O$U its smart to look at other schools now.

Exactly....when the rubber meets the road, how much will playing for Ohio St. really mean if you cannot ever attend a bowl game or play in a Big 10 Championship game? That's the questions these kids will have to ask themselves.

in that earlier interview he said he would only go to osu if the made Fickel the head coach.  Does he really think they're going to give the guy a permanent contract extension just so one player will come?  Fickell's uncertainty as the future head coach will come into play a lot.  If he goes out and somehow lays an egg and only wins 8 games and loses to Michigan, no way he's back next season.

Exactly.  This is what we will find out once NCAA sanctions are handed out.

I also like hearing that Strobel has been in his ear as well.  Strobel was considered a Buckeye lock until this whole thing blew up in Columbus so Kalis has a friend he can confide in who might have been feeling similar things regarding OSU and being open to giving Michigan a chance.

This could open the door for Brionte Dunn to defect. Sounds like Strobel may have Kalis considering it.  This weekend could be huge!

C'mon Strobel....work you magic this weekend.

Ohio St.'s actions are not unlike their lower intestine: stinky and loaded with danger.

"I did speak to Luke Fickell minutes ago, and I told him I was de-committing from Ohio State," Kalis announced. "I want to keep all my options open, and will consider several programs going forward, including Ohio State. That's really all I want to say about my recruitment at this time."

Strobel could be a major reason why we land Kalis (IF we land Kalis). This is going to be one amazing class in the trenches.
