Is Hoke still learning on the job? Tuesday, April 22, 2014 5:01 PM (permalink)

“I think I could have been a better leader,” Hoke said. “I just think I could have done a better job. It goes back to consistency, every day.”

Why did it take him three years to figure out this team had a problem with consistent coaching? How in the world is that possible? Is it just because he thinks his job is in jeopardy?

So I asked him: “What do you mean by consistent coaching?”

“I look at it like parenting,” he said. “We have a daughter, Kelly. We were consistent in everything we did — right, wrong or indifferent every day. I think it’s the same thing with coaching. You aren’t going to coach a guy hard one day and back off the next day. Consistency in how you are teaching and demanding how you want a fundamental taught.”

Now, coaches have a way of saying things without saying them. They aren’t the most naturally revealing creatures on the planet. But as he said this, it sure seemed like he was saying that last year’s team didn’t have this kind of consistent coaching.

And if that’s the case, he is the one to blame. Hoke is the one who should be setting the tone, both for his players and how his coaches coach.

“There is a consistency, to me, in how you approach every practice and every drill and everything you do as a coach, so they learn the consistency,” Hoke said. “What comes with consistency is discipline. So that discipline becomes part of it.”

Later, he talked about new offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier, and he praised his consistent coaching approach. “He has a way, in his teaching, that guys respond,” Hoke said. “He does a great job of circling back. Say, I missed a block. He might rip Sam’s butt a bit, but he will circle back and make sure, ‘Hey, Sam, you have done it before, so just go out and do it.’

“There is a consistency on how he handles it.”

And yes, when he says that, it suggests that Michigan didn’t have that last year under former offensive coordinator Al Borges.

Practice and repetition are like DNA for a football team. It is the building block for everything. It creates the discipline and expectation and the foundation for everything. So if you don’t coach the same way every single rep, if you don’t hold the same standards all the time, if the players are allowed to slack off even a little, everything starts to rot from the core.

I've said this before and I'll say it again, Michigan isn't a place where you learn on the job. You need to already have a plan and know how to execute it. If guys aren't coaching the way you like it, fire their asses! Don't wait until the off-season. Hoke is the head coach of one of the most powerful football programs in the county, he needs to start acting like it. F*ckin-A!

Whew, just took a breath...haha

Ohio St.'s actions are not unlike their lower intestine: stinky and loaded with danger.

I think next fall will be the beginning of a long, successful tenure for UM football and Brady himself.

All of you will be pleasantly surprised!

His a$$ is on tbr hot seat this season, and deserves to be there too! Between funk and Mallory still being employed to his newest statements just support his poor management set. When players from the safety position say publicly how they weren't even coached during practices, not watching film? Our self evident o line debacle, piss poor game mgmnt, for Christ's sake he can't even call an f'n timeout!!!!! The guy is a bufum and his role at um will be ultimately taken care of on its own natural digression.
