A quarterback battle is brewing in Ann Arbor.
A surprise contender has emerged to compete at quarterback with Devin Gardner and Shane Morris.
Gardner revealed he’s not only sharing first-team reps with Morris but freshman Wilton Speight as well.

Competition is great...but, if Speight becomes a major factor, that doesn't bode well for us IMO.

I believe Speight has game...but he's a true freshman and, according to some sources, is still very raw! Best case scenario is that Speight redshirts this year & challenges Morris for the starting job in 2015!

Hopefully the healthy competition keeps Devin's head in the game and pays dividends for the team.  Devin is clearly the best all-around QB of the bunch, but he needs to make better decisions than he did for much of last season

Based on Hoke's comments it doesn't sound fierce. Short of injury issues, I personally would be SHOCKED if anyone outside of DG started.

"(Morris is) doing OK, he's doing all right -- he's not ready to be the starter at Michigan," Michigan coach Brady Hoke said Thursday before the Wolverines' fourth spring practice. "Devin's got the most experience at the job.

"I wouldn't temper anything (with regard to the level of competition at quarterback). If we were starting today, (Morris) wouldn't be the guy out there. Two weeks from now … we'll see."

Competition is "fierce" at every position in the spring. We had a kid that was first team all Big East MLB his junior season at Cincinnati, spring ball the next year he was "third" on the depth chart at MIKE and "second" at WILL and barely getting any reps. Guess who was our starting MIKE week 1? Yep, that guy. Spring is all about developing and competition. Most of the time that competition isn't even real.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know what QB's were on the roster when true freshman Chad Henne won the job?

Matt Guiterrez was slated to be the starter before an injury forced him out prior to the season opener that season. Henne was his backup and played well enough in his starts to keep his starting job.

I don't know what other QB's were on the roster backe then...

I sure hope there isn't fierce competition. That means DG is out injured or has regressed mightily.

There's as much of a QB controversy/competition in Ann Arbor as there is Denver...

Why?  What are you basing this on?  The knock on Speight from some of the "experts" has been the hitch in his delivery, average arm strength, and accuracy.  I know it's easy to fall in love with his size but until we actually see him play we have no idea how he stacks up against Morris.  Right now he seems to be a firm #4, regardless of this so-called "fierce competition" at QB this spring.
