Does Brady Hoke have quality wins on his resume? Tuesday, July 15, 2014 11:18 AM (permalink)

Got into a discussion with a Florida fan over Brady Hoke vs. Will Muschamp who I have often compared. He brought up an interesting question, what are Brady Hoke's best wins over the last 3 seasons? He could point to wins over Texas A&M (11-2), LSU (10-3), and South Carolina in 2012(11-2) as rays of hope for Muschamp.

Based on record the best wins under Brady Hoke are:
11-3 Va Tech in 2011
10-3 Northwestern in 2012
9-4 Nebraska in 2011.

We haven't beaten an Ohio State, Michigan State, ND, or Nebraska team that's had fewer than 4 losses. Our lone quality OOC victory(and arguably lone quality win period) was the Sugar Bowl win over Va Tech that we squeaked by.

It's the off season so, thoughts????

Unfortunately, great points about Hoke, MF4L...which is why I think Hoke needs a resume-cementing win in 2014!

Whether it's @ND, @MSU or @Ohio, doesn't matter but he needs to win 2 out of those three IMO.

The best win under Hoke for the program has been against 6-7 tOSU in 2011, on home field.

Never mind that the Buckeyes were a terrible team, and the game went down to the wire.  Michigan loses that game and that is 10-straight losses by now to a team with whom they supposedly have North American sports' best rivalry.

Next I'd say the 2012 win against Sparty as they would have 6 straight wins against UM if not for that game.

The Virginia Tech Sugan Bowl win looks good nationally because it was a BCS bowl, but neither team really deserved to be there.  That Hokies team was not very good (coming off a 38-10 loss in the ACC Champ game), and they outplayed Michigan badly in the Sugan Bowl.  That game was one of the first examples of how badly Gorgeous Borges shat the bed in big games.  Over a month to gameplan and he architects 184 total yards (56 coming on the ground) with Denard Robinson in the backfield.

So nationally, for all the PR reasons, the Sugar Bowl is his signature win, but Michigan needed the win against Ohio State more, and it bought Hoke more goodwill.

I would agree.  The stop-the-bleeding wins over OSU and Sparty, while maybe not the "biggest", were probably the most important with the ND night game huge comeback in the 4th up there somewhere. The mileage Hoke got from a sloppy Sugar Bowl win was a bit much but we're at the point where style points are our last concern.  Going for 2 on the last play of the game against OSU is still his biggest call and I still give him credit for having the 'nads to go for it.   But at the end of the day there's nothing to really hang his hat on, which makes '14 make it or break it time as far as I'm concerned.

I agree in terms of importance than Hoke has some wins to his credit (even if they are to 6 loss teams). I just don't know that we've beaten a quality team in 3 years outside of Va Tech. I don't know how impressive beaten teams during down years actually is.

I remember having this conversation with a Spartan fan a few years ago. It took until year 4 for Dantonio to record what would be considered a win over a true quality opponent. This is Hoke's 4th year on the job. The time is now to get one. Imho, if Hoke goes 0'fer in the three rivalry games this season, he should be broomed the Sunday morning after the OSU game.

Hard to argue with you there…however, things get sticky if he goes 9-3 (maybe 10-3 with a bowl win) and loses to the domers, sparty and ohio…I get the feeling DB wouldn’t ax him.

I think that's very possible honestly when I break down the potential W/L. 9-3 probably means the Cap1 or Gator Bowl against the 3rd or 4th team from the SEC. We could easily finish 9-4 without a quality win and I have a hard time believing DB would make a move under that scenario. Essentially it would be a repeat of where Nebraska is with Bo Pelini (though Pelini has played in a Conference title game).

Not sure Dantonio is the standard that we should compare Hoke to (even though he owns us right now). It hasn't taken most good coaches at top level BCS schools 4 years to amass quality wins, even those that took over dumpster fires.

How about the other way…we somehow manage to win 2 of those 3 games (domers, sparty, ohio) and turn in an 8-5/7-6 with a bowl loss…?

I personally believe we should be competing for championships at least once every 3 years, especially in this weak ass Big 10 climate, so neither is acceptable in my eyes. We shouldn't go through a full recruiting cycle (freshman class - upperclassmen status) without competing for a championship of some kind.

By the looks of things, we're talking 5 f**king years and MULTIPLE classes going through the recruiting cycle.

No way.  Keep the lame duck through the bowl game under the guise of "I need to assess the entire season", axe him, completely fumble the new coaching search while Internet fans track airline flights for Les Miles and Jim Harbaugh, then hire Ron English in February just in time to lose a few recruits along the way.  It's edgy and never been done before but it could...wait...maybe it has been done before.

Ha. It really is pathetic that a meaningless bowl game would even factor into a decision about whether or not to retain a head coach, but, that's how we roll unfortunately. We're officially Notre Dame post-Lou Holtz. A once nationally respected cfb powerhouse now mired in mediocrity.

I will say this. I was told about a month ago by a former player who played under Mo & Carr that Hoke is coaching for both his and Dollar Dave's job this year. He claims that the infighting between the different factions that Brandon was able to quiet down after firing RR is on the verge of exploding again. There are still many former players that played for Bo who despise that Carr's players seemingly got there way when Hoke was given the job. While they like Hoke well enough as a person and love his enthusiasm for Michigan, they don't believe he was deserving of the job. There is a lot of pushback against Brandon right now as well. The war that he declared against the student season ticket holders isn't gonna fly with Schlissel. It would be great if Phil could comment on what he's hearing in regards to Hoke and Brandon's job security. One thing this former player was certain of was that if Hoke fails this year and it is determined that a coaching change is necessary, Brandon won't be making the next hire on his own like he did with Hoke (and that's if Brandon is even able to survive and keep his own job...).

Not sure the ND is mired in mediocrity.....They played (and lost badly) in the National Champ Game a couple of years ago. Which is more then we can say.

The point I was making is that ND WAS mired in mediocrity for over 15 years post Lou Holtz up until the 2012 season. Before that, they were in the same spot that we're in now (and for a far longer period of time).
