Not a huge shock. Smith has always looked like a more natural runner and was ahead coming out of the spring. I expect both to play but if Green doesn't become harder to tackle his value decreases

New offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier made it clear this spring that he plans to feature multiple backs during games this season in the team's new running scheme. By doing so, Nussmeier and Hoke are hoping their stable of runners can maintain health and fresh legs for a longer period of time this season.

But while multiple players will see time, there will still likely be a lead runner week in and week out. And as Michigan prepares to open fall camp next Monday, Hoke says that runner -- as of now -- is sophomore De'Veon Smith.

Hopefully we finally have a true RB by committee this year. One thing I have noticed from a lot of depth chart predictions from people in the know echos what I have thought all off-season: we have a lot of guys that are Big Ten caliber football players, but not a lot of standouts. Statements like by committee, heavy competition, any 1 of the 3 could start, etc. all show that we have depth but no one has separated themselves. These statements could all be said about RB, WR beyond Funchess, TE, OL, DT, WLB, and SS.

De'Veon has a little bit of an "edge" to himself which will serve him well.

I always thought that Green was getting a lot of hype, while Smith was being overlooked by some. I still see Green as a very important part of our RB unit & knowing how Nussmeier likes to use multi-backs in his system, I'm sure Green will get his fair share of carries.

Don't really care who's declared our #1 RB...as long as both Green & Smith are productive!!

they'll probably be 1A and 1B.  Coach Nuss doesn't seem to have his head up his arse like Borges and won't refuse to rotate backs in and out.

I am on board with you as well. I foresee Green slipping out altogether and an unknown guy emerge. Smith is a decent back but In the old days he would be a 2nd stringer at best but to me he showed more potential than Green. Green cant run over anyone and cant make anyone miss last time I checked those were pre-req's for a RB.

Both will do fine. Amazing how quickly people jump off ship after freshman seasons.

I wouldn't say I've given up on Green. I've dropped the idea of him being an TJ Yeldon/Marcus Lattimore/Todd Gurley/Trent Richardson/Isaiah Crowell type guy as you`d hope for from a top 5 guy at his position coming out (#1 on most lists).

If they pop, it's usually right away, as opposed to having to wait 2-3 years (barring injury/off the field things).

Love D. Smith as a back, I feel his a bit quicker and a better all around back than Green who feels more like Kevin Grady to me. I hope not and I'm only judging on feel, so we'll see.

Uneek - How can you say Smith would only be a second stringer in the old days? He just finished his FRESHMAN year for Pete's sake!

See what he does this year....

Yeah I'm giving the kids their due time, could develop into somebody we highlight for the next twenty years for their greatness or another grady 5* buster. I think green rode into town on his HS acolates only to find himself outmatched by a large margin. It appears he hit the weight room hard this off season. Might pay off big time.

I should say, I don't think he'll be Grady in that he'll be a bust, but that he'll be the big back with some ability that will be a grinder and struggle to ever live up to the hype. Not a full blown bust but Deveon will be our stud IMO. I hope I'm wrong and they're a Bama like RB combo, but I don't think that'll be the case.

Easy because to be the #1 rated back in the country he didn't show anything like that last year. He ran scared and soft and frankly I am not sold on him. It doesn't take 5 star back 2 years to make a difference right away. In fact its probably the easiest position on offense to excel in right away granted the OL was horrible but even still watch how he ran last year. Atrain, Hart, wheatly, were all guys who were highly touted out of high school and performed their Freshman year.

IMO he has a short leash I hope he proves me wrong

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

He also had Al Borges as his OC who thought Fitz T would somehow return to his form of his 1000 yard sophomore season but kept feeding him the rock anyways...

And he also had to deal with an o line trying to figure out how to run the complex blocking schemes set in place by one Al Borges...

Oh and there's the fact that D Green was playing heavy all last season...

Bottom line, I'm willing to give Green the benefit of the doubt in seeing how the new leaner version does working with a new OC who seems to do a pretty good job at developing quality RB's...

There are examples of both ways. I have brought up Carlos Hyde many times as a top rated RB who did NOTHING his first two seasons, and then there's guys like TJ Yeldon who bursted onto the scene right away. Lot of factors going into it. If I see the same issues with Green this year then the hope dwindles.

Al was a huge f-ing problem last year.  I note the one game where Green got a few carries, he looked decent.  Al's constant lineup changes never let this offense get any flow.  If it did not work the first time, Al would switch the personal and try again.

I am pretty sure we are going to see how terrible Big Al was last year.

The thing with Green I was waiting on was flashes. No one was going to produce big numbers with the line the offense in the shape that it was but what you're hoping to see is flashes of elite ability. At no point last year did show anything that would lead me to believe he was on his way to being an elite college back.

The fact that he's still behind Smith, who was in his same class just furthers the point. Now that doesn't mean that Green can't be a productive RB. Todd Gurley he is NOT though IMO and I'm perfectly comfortable saying that even after a year and a spring.

40% of the top 5 RBs in each class since 2010 (Rivals) have went over 500 yards in their freshman year. The ones that did usually went way over. In 2013, only one did. Patience.
