"I think the whole thing is a bit sideways," McCombs said of the selection process during an interview with ESPN 1250 San Antonio. "I don't have any doubt that Charlie is a fine coach. I think he would make a great position coach, maybe a coordinator.

"But I don't believe [he belongs at] what should be one of the three most powerful university programs in the world right now at UT-Austin. I don't think it adds up."

"I think it is a kick in the face," McCombs said. "Beyond the fact of what actually happened. We have boosters that have a lot of knowledge about the game. When we decided to go get Mack -- from the time we decided to go get Mack to about 30 hours later to have a press conference here and it was done -- we had a lot of input before we went after him.

"So I don't know what the big rush was. I was kind of pleased that [Texas athletic director Steve] Patterson already said that he'd like to get it done in the middle of January. That seemed logical to me. I'm a team player, but I think they went about it wrong and made the selection wrong."

Former Vikings owner and big time financial supporter of Texas seems a bit salty about the hire...

Strong is a hell of a coach but not a good fit for Texas IMO. The non-football related stuff will eat him alive. He just wants to coach football and you can't do that at a place like Texas. The shaking hands and kissing babies (things Charlie Strong hates) is as if not more important than the X's and O's and recruiting.

He better win early and big.

OK....I will kick the elephant in the room. Anybody think his race has anything to do with the negativity? It is Texas still.......I personally think he will be a very good coach.

Just an opinion but I think it's two things.  One being, Texas fans/booster hearing big names being batted around then "settling" for Charlie Strong. Everyone from Nick Saban to Lovie Smith was rumored to be a candidate for the job. Strong comes off as a plan C hire even though he's a hell of a coach.

Or as LSUFreak puts it

Second, as Charlie Strong is about to find out, the non-football people at Texas have and want a lot influence and they were largely left out of the process by a brand new AD. So you have two outsiders set to decide the future of Texas football, neither of whom appreciate outside influence.

Of course its about race because if Charlie Strong was white based on his proven track record at Louisville and FLA he has two NC's as a DC and a Sugar Bowl win as a HC. And yet your settling? Gruden won a SB with Dungy's players and flamed out at TB. Hasnt coached in at least 5 years but he is a better candiate really?!?!?!

Hell our coach dont have that and no one said a word when Hoke was hired (which I thought wqas a good hire at the time)

Yes the bottom line is McComb didnt want a black coach at Texas unless someone can tell me why Charlie Strong would be a bad hire.

Trust me if he wins 10-12 games a year he wont have to kiss babies they will be kissing him!!! And his A**!!!

Rich Rod is/was a good X's and O's coach, like Strong, and he won, like Stong has won; however, Rich Rod failed at Michigan because it's not just about X's and O's.

zjgm02 said it great on another thread:

"Forde a bit of a blowhard, but he was on Tony Kornheiser a couple weeks ago talking about all the other parts of the job at Texas that have nothing to do with recruiting and gameplanning. He compared it to the Kentucky BB job and what a bad hire Bill Gillespie was, leading to only 2 years on the job.

Basically, the job requires a big personality guy who's affable with the boosters and on the banquet circuit.

UT is probably better served hiring an NFL guy, but most of them aren't known for their affability either.

Correct...I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but it is the way of CFB and CBB.

One of the reasons some guys prefer the NFL to CFB: in the NFL you don't have to go on the road and recruit and you don't have to kiss anyone's baby. In the NFL it's strictly about football.

You aren't that new here, so this must be a case of selective memory. A preponderance of this board knew that Brandumb settled for Hoke after at least a couple swings and misses.

I don't doubt that race is an issue for some who are disappointed with the Strong hire--as it will be in most every facet of American life until we all grow the fvck up--but race probably has less to do with it than Strong being a quiet guy with limited HC experience. They thought they had a shot a Saban, so they were destined for disappointment as soon as he said no.

BTW, I think Strong can bench more than Zook. Guy looks like a brick sh!thouse.

I dont disagree with that it is more about just X's and O's. I think that the expectations of a guy being a handshake personality guy is minor compared to what you do on the field. In RR's case his flaw was that he didnt care about def. He thought he could work on the O and the D would take care of itself. And when he had back to back losing seasons thats what was doing him in. Hell do you think if RR went 10-2, 9-3, 8-4 and beat OSU 2 out of the three years we would still have RR as the coach regardless of his off the field personality.

As a former player you know winning cures all and if he goes out next year and wins 10 games they wont give a rats a** on how he treats boosters.

That's true, I didn't look from that perspective. If you were expecting a Gruden, harbaugh, Sabah type name and u end up with strong, I can see the disappointment. All I have to say in that Case......"welcome to the club, Texas" pretty much a harbaugh, miles......Hoke hiring scenario. Lol. Except better. Wish we had Coach Strong.

Everybody always thinks their school is more important than it really is. We all thought michigan was an elite coaching gig and look how that turned out. Texas thought that everyone would be beating down the doors to come there but had to settle on at least their 5th choice. Hell Louisville ' s ad has called that job a destination job!

Which is why you should know with absolute certainty who your next hire is before you sh*tcan your coach.

Yeah if we wind the clock back there was not universal dancing in the streets when Hoke was hired. I believe the headline at another site read "We are Notre Dame"

Like a lot of programs we found how this job is not as attractive as many believed. 2 searches in 6 years, there weren't people beating down our door in either instance.

I think a bunch of us got on board with the hire after the fact b/c it didn't make sense to sulk.  Then going 11-2 made all of us happy.  The last two falls, not so much.
