Position battles were a hot topic yesterday at Michigan’s media day.
Brady Hoke and his coordinators, Doug Nussmeier and Greg Mattison held court and entertained questions from the media in attendance. Here’s an update on the position battles of interest as Michigan heads into the second week of camp and prepares for Saturday’s public night scrimmage.

The O-line still sounds very unsettled. Will no more after the first scrimmage but not crazy to hear about mass position mixing and matching. Was hoping we'd just build on what happened in the spring and guys could just getting better at this spots.

May all just be smoke and mirrors by Hoke who knows.

is mason cole (tr fr) really ahead of guys like kalis and dawson, who have been here longer and were crazy hyped coming in?  to me, that's more of a sign that kalis and dawson are not where they need to be, as opposed to mason cole being an unbelievable talent

oh, and if Miller is the starter at center, I really hope he improved tenfold, because I can't get the images of him getting bulldozed by DL out of my head from the first few games last year

it might not be worse, but if it's the same, then that's just as bad

Well, there are a few possibilities.

1) Mason Cole is a once-in-a-generation talent, who will usher in a new era of Michigan domination.
2) The competition at O-line is pretty weak.
3) Hoke knows that Cole is probably going to redshirt and this just a chance for them to evaluate him with the first team before he gets buried on the depth chart.

I understand the need to try out different combinations but really hope they settle on a top 5 very soon, as the Appalachian St. game is under 3 weeks away & they need to develop solid chemistry. Like some here, I too am a bit concerned about a true freshman (Cole) getting major PT & consideration as a starter...doesn't say much about our other highly-rated linemen. Not to downplay Cole's abilities but the OL position is well-known to be very tough for a true freshman to learn. I still think our best 5 will be Magnuson-Bosch-Glasgow-Kalis-Braden.

I love our RBs but confused as to how Green is being raved about, in terms of getting into incredible shape & working hard, yet he's #3 on the depth chart?  Something just doesn't sound right about that.

That's where I`m at too Phil. Cole as the starter basically means he`s ahead of Jake Long and Taylor Lewan at the same age. Possible sure, but HIGHLY unlikely. Even Jake spent a year at RT before moving over to the blindside.

I just can't buy it, which to me means we have some 2nd and 3rd year players that are waaaay behind development wise.

I saw on another forum that I believe it was two seasons ago that a walk-on DL was running with the 1s (edit: it was Nathan Brink) for the first week of camp and all the fans were freaking out. Came to game week and the guy didn't play at all, and hardly played all season.

Point is, some stock can be bought into these moves, but not much should be. In two weeks we'll have a much better idea.
