Sounds good coach, but I'm not exactly sure how telling a guy he needs to do a better job developing his players makes it happen. I don't know that motivation has been the issue for the coaches. A kick to the pants is great and all but you still need the ABILITY to produce.

Hoke's loyalty to his assistants will be his undoing.

In the opinion of some, it was a year too late.  In the opinion of even more, it was a couple months too late and cost the program any semblance of a decent year.

So what was your point again?

Probably should have been 2 or 3. Regardless, by the end of 2014, this whole discussion about coaches will be moot. We will either be coming off a very successful 2014 or being facing major coaching changes (possibly a complete overturn, includind HC) for the 2015 season.

Hey guys, I'm new here but not new to Michigan football.

First, I don't think the coaching change had anything to do with Brady Hoke. Letting Borges go and bringing in Nussmeier has all the fingerprints of DB.

As for the staff needing to develop players better, I would think nothing has been more obvious. The team is void of leadership, both at the player level and especially the coaches. Having Jake Ryan back on the field should help the defense in this regard. The natural leader of the offense (QB) doesn't appear to have the full faith of the HC and that hurts him in the huddle.

I'm not an advocate for a coaching carousel but there needs to be some serious improvement in both effort and results on the field this year.

Damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Hoke fires an assistant (or DB but either way he's gone), the one that needed to fired yet he should have fired 2-3. He fires 2-3 and should have fired 4-5. You don't fire a coach unless you have a better option. Nuss is a better option (we think) so he made the move.

We ask Hoke (and coaches) to take responsibility for developing the players. He takes that ownership in this article and says they will. Clearly, he can't do anymore than that right now to show you because it's February 11.

For the most part, Hoke has done what we fans (who really have no clue what's going on behind closes doors in the Fort) have asked him to do this off season.

With that said, the past 2 years has garnered this type of scrutiny so he better not be surprised when people are quick to jump and question.

The proof will be on the field this fall where Hoke is ultimately judged but I have more hope today than I did last year.

Bingo

There were development issues across the board and coaching issues in several areas (secondary, O-line, LBers). Firing Borges fixed one coaching issue, not all of them. Firing Borges doesn't help the secondary in any way.

It's inconceivable to me that either line coach still has a job.  Borges was offered up as the sacrificial lamb (and rightfully so) but it almost seems like a PR move more than anything else.  Nuss can call plays but in the end, position coaches need to develop players.  If you don't know how to play your position the play-calling becomes moot.

Hoke said his peace, acknowledged what we wanted and now it's time to put up or shut up...It's pretty simple and black and white...start winning games. Of course, we've been saying that same thing for 12 months now since last February after signing day. This was a bit more aggressive cuz it sounds like Hoke has now put some heat onto all his assistants and I'm sure DB put a bunsen burner under Hoke's seat as well...win and we're all good, piss away another season next year and it could get ugly.

It might be a year or two late, but happy that Hoke realizes  the issue & spoken publicly about it...FINALLY.

Frankly, it's the truth & the onus falls on ALL the coaches. Of course, talk is cheap & the proof will be in how the team performs (develops) throughout the fall.

This is exactly what we talked about in a previous thread. The coaches have to develop the talent. And folks he cant fire everyone because that doesnt gurantee anything but him getting fired. He believes in the staff he has and frankly I think he should hire a DL coach and take himself out of the mix. You dont see the elite coaches coaching a position as well as the team. You want to be invloved sure. but hire a guy that can devote the necssary time to the position.

This is put up or shut up year for Hoke and he is quite aware of it!!

Hoke only coaches the nose guards correct?  I thought GM was the d-line coach.

Hoke coaches the interior d-lineman, while GM coaches the DEs.

We all know where the problem areas are though. Hoke has talked about the struggles in the secondary and with the O-line. There aren't 4-5 areas that need an upgrade coaching wise so I at least can't see a place where I'd call for mass coaching changes. When you have a known, multi-year issues (which we have with the O-line and secondary) and you're solution is to call a guy into the office and tell him he needs to do a better job, that's not really fixing the issue. Unless you feel as though the issue is one of motivation anyway. Telling someone they need to do a better job doesn't actually cause it to happen.

I agree that you don't just make a change for the sake of change. The issue is, we had the opportunity to upgrade position coaches and didn't take advantage. Guys like Larry Johnson, Bob Bostad, and Manny Diaz are among the best in the country at their positions. We had the chance to make a play for those guys and didn't do it.

I love how some of you are still clinging to this thought that Hoke is too loyal to his coaches...even after he fired the one man of staff he would be the most loyal to.

Also, Hoke fired Borges. Not Brandon. Hoke hired Nuss. Not Brandon. Let it go conspiracy therorists.

Borges would be the top guy he would be loyal to? Hecklinski and Smith have been with Hoke way longer than Borges was. Hecklinski since 2004 and Smith since 2003.
