Frank99 asked in the Amber Deane thread about a 6-foot-5 junior that Borseth said had committed. That would be Allie Havers of Mattawan. Free Press has her ranked as "the 18th-best player in the state regardless of class."

six foot five sounds great! and i hope she can bring the rebounding, because that still appears to be an issue for Michigan.

From this brief scouting report from the Detroit News, which has her ranked 17th in the state regardless of class, rebounding does seem to be one of her strengths:
      17. Allie Havers, 6-5, Jr., C, Mattawan: A dominating inside threat, she scored 38 points and grabbed 23 rebounds in a postseason win over Benton Harbor last year. She is being recruited by numerous Division 1 teams, including Big Ten schools. She is also an outstanding volleyball player.
Also, Kelsey Mitchell is known as a strong rebounder, so she should be able to help shore up that area starting next year.

With Havers and Gleason, it seems like the 2013 recruiting class is off to a great start.

Ahh, I saw here play in the state championship softball game which Mattawan won.  Funny that for the most part she played OF and they DHed for her.  Finally they let her bat and she hit a HR.  Obviously she's very tall but could stand to put on a few pounds---sort of a Kate Thompson build and seemed reasonably athletic.

A brief Kalamazoo Gazette item, in which she's called a "6-foot-5 matchup nightmare" and "easily one of the top two or three players on this side of the state," has Havers's stats from last year:
Havers averaged 14.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, four blocks, just under two steals and shot 49 percent from the field as a sophomore for the Wildcats, not to mention a 7-for-16 clip from 3-point range. That production was coupled with sharing quite a bit of offense with graduated four-year starter Alyssa McBride (17 ppg).

Midwest Recruiting Report has Havers ranked as the #9 player in the Midwest (including Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin) for the 2013 class, and #2 in Michigan (behind Antania Hayes of Detroit King).

I meant to make a post about a game against Benton Harbor a couple weeks ago in which Havers nearly had a triple double--32 points, 10 rebounds, and 8 blocks. See Allie Havers dominant in Mattawan girls basketball win over Benton Harbor
"Allie played outstanding. It was her best all-around performance of the year," Mattawan coach Troy Wright said. "She was looking to score and her teammates got her the ball. When the double or triple team comes, she can find her teammates. She's a very underrated passer."

A shorthanded Mattawan team put up a good effort tonight against undefeated St. Joseph (ranked no. 4 in the state in class B) before falling 42-36. With two starters out with injuries, Mattawan's coach had Allie Havers essentially play "point-center" and bring the ball up the court against St. Joseph's press. It sounds like she did pretty well in that role, in addition to scoring 14 points and pulling down 9 rebounds. Havers's intimidating presence in the middle led St. Joseph to launch 31 triples, and they made only 5.

It seems as if Havers always puts up impressive numbers against Benton Harbor. In a 54-35 Mattawan victory last night, Havers scored 30 points, which pushed her career total over 1,000. She made 12 of 13 shots, including 4 of 5 three-pointers, while also grabbing 15 rebounds.
"She played like an all-stater tonight," Mattawan coach Troy Wright said of Havers. "When she plays well, we play well. Tonight she played excellent."

MLive.com's Scott DeCamp has written a nice profile titled Allie Havers is humble heroine for Mattawan's girls basketball team. The article has her stats on the season--17.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, 5.3 blocks, 1.6 steals and 1.3 assists per game--and some insight into her character:
"When you talk to her you don't see (her competitive streak) because she's just so (nice)," [Mattawan coach Troy] Wright said about Havers, a three-year varsity starter and strong all-state candidate. "But she's the ultimate competitor. It's there. She hates losing when we lose — she's devastated. I don't care how many points she scored.

"We lost a game earlier this year and she had 27 points, but she was devastated. And one game, she scored 11 or 12, she doesn't care, we won. The kids notice that and they know that she is one of them. She treats herself that way first."
The article also mentions that she chose Michigan over basketball offers from MSU, Arkansas, and St. Louis and a volleyball offer from OSU. It's good to see Borseth winning some head-to-head recruiting battles with the Spartans.

                            This I found surprising:
Havers, who will sign during her senior year, is projected to play wing for the Wolverines. She shoots 49.3 percent from the floor, a team-best 31.4 percent from 3-point range and 77.1 percent from the free throw line.

"Yeah, I think they're going to play her at the 2 or 3," Wright said. "Michigan's offense, if you watch them play, they interchange all of their positions. They post up their guards, they let their bigs shoot 3s, and she's perfect for what they run."
I haven't seen Havers play, so perhaps she really is a taller, more athletic version of Kate Thompson, but I think you'd want Havers at center, where like Rachel Sheffer she'd have plenty of opportunities to score both inside and out. But I suppose you could put a more physical player like Kelsey Mitchell down low and play Havers at the 3 or 4, which could pose some real matchup problems for opposing teams. In any event, Havers sounds like a very versatile player who will be a terrific addition to the roster.

MLive has a feature on Havers on the occasion of her being named first-team all-state ('Sky's the limit' for Mattawan junior Allie Havers, an Associated Press Class A first-team all-state basketball player). The article, among other things, has some details on her athletic schedule for the summer:

"In the beginning of the summer, I will be playing on an AAU (basketball) team called the Kalamazoo Heat for a couple of tournaments," she said. "After that, I'm going to be in the weight room a lot for sure. Then I think I'm actually going to play on a beach volleyball team for a while, just to stay in shape. I love volleyball."

There's a lot to love about Havers' game on the basketball court, though. She averaged 17.9 points and nearly 12 rebounds, more than five blocks, 1.5 assists and 1.6 steals this season for the Wildcats (16-7), who advanced to the district finals game with a young team.

Havers is among the Free Press's Class A first-teamers.

Coach Troy Wright: "Allie is the best player I've ever coached. She is a talented and versatile player who played every position for us. She led our team in points, rebounds and shooting percentage. She was also our best three-point shooter."

Kalamazoo Gazette selected Havers their Classes A-B girls basketball player of the year for the 2011-12 season.

Based on her ability to handle the basketball with either hand, face-the-basket scoring ability and shooting touch out to the 3-point arc, Havers appears to be a good fit for U-M coach Kevin Borseth's "equal-opportunity offense."

"She is the most difficult high school player to account for in the game today. Her athletic ability, her skill base, is so good across the board that it is just maddening to account for her. Then you take into account her defense," said Kalamazoo Central coach Dan Thornton, who coaches the [Kalamazoo] Heat [AAU] squad on which Havers plans to play.

"She can make good decisions like a point guard, she can operate around the mid-post like a forward and she can post up like a center. Her skill sets transcend all three major groupings, major positions on the basketball floor."
